Monday Box Office Report – Rev up those chainsaws and cut a hobbit down to size

It’s a new year, and a new slate for Hollywood! With the old year having been shot gangland style and left to rot outside a seedy night club, it was time to ring in a new season of sequels, dramas, action films and kiddy movies. So how did the first weekend of the new year do then at the box office?

The latest take in the horror that is the Texas Chainsaw franchise, AKA Kervyn’s last vacation video, took top spots, banking a respectable sum considering the content that was on offer. While not as profitable as the $28 million from the 2003 remake, the film still did better than the  prequel, which only managed to extreme lumberjack it’s way to $18 million in 2006.

Django Unchained is sitting pretty at the number two spot, as the Quentin Tarantino directed western has managed to score over $106 million so far, while The Hobbit dropped from first into third. Still, it’s a comfy drop, as it has been cushioned by over $800 million in global sales so far.

Here’s a look at who made what, in the first movie-going week of 2013;

  • Texas Chainsaw 3D – $23 Million
  • Django Unchained - $20 Million
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - $17.5 Million
  • Les Miserables - $16.1 Million
  • Parental Guidance - $10.1 Million
  • Jack Reacher - $9.3 Million
  • This is 40 - $8.5 Million
  • Lincoln - $5.2 Million
  • The guilt trip - $4.5 Million
  • Promised Land - $4.3 Million

Les Miserables has been a hit so far, racing past the $100 million mark, while Parental Guidance exhibited the same amount of plot predictability, dropping expectedly several slots. This is 40, Lincoln and Jack Reacher have been solid popcorn flicks so far, edging a spot or two lower, with 2012 also saying goodbye to Life of Pi and Skyfall from the top ten.
