Ryan Gosling is the very definition of a pretty boy, but chances are that you won’t be seeing any blown-up posters of his face in his second collaboration with director Nicolas Winding-Refn (Drive) adorning the walls of twelve year-old girls any time soon. Well, that is unless these twelve year-old girls are into faces beaten to a bloody pulp. Which, if the internet has taught me anything, is pretty likely.

Well now we have a first glimpse at the reason for the beat up state of said formerly pretty face with this teaser trailer for Only God Forgives.

Julian (Gosling) is a former kickboxer and gangster living in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for his family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed, their mother and criminal matriarch, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

(Apologies for the low quality of the clip, but it’s the only version currently available. Will update with a better copy once it’s released)

Gosling and Winding-Refn’s previous collaboration, Drive, was one of the best films of 2011, a masterful study in moody pacing and explosively shocking violence. This looks like it’s going to be headed that same way, much to my giddy anticipation.

Unfortunately, we have no solid schedule for when this violent explosion will happen though, as the film has just been given a tentative third quarter 2013 release date, but expect it to show up at Cannes earlier in the year.
