Awards season is starting to pick up steam now. The Oscar nominations are imminent, the Golden Globes are almost here, and the list for the BAFTA awards have just been released as well. While the Director’s Guild of America doesn’t have nearly as much tea and biscuits in their nominations, what they do have are some legitimate heavyweights that are deserving of an award or two. Here they are.
It’s not the most comprehensive list out there, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in pure body (That’s what she said!). On the list for a DGA prize are the following helmers:
- Ben Affleck – Argo
- Steven Spielberg – Lincoln
- Kathryn Bigelow – Zero Dark Thirty
- Ang Lee – Life of Pi
- Tom Hooper – Les Miserables
It’s a solid list, although a surprising one at that. The Wachowski Starship and Cloud Atlas aren’t there, David O Russell scoring big with The Silver Linings Playbook hasn’t managed to make it onto the list and yes, I’ll begrudgingly admit, not even Quentin Tarantino and his Django Unchained film are anywhere to be seen.
The awards for best director in that guild, take place next month. What do you think? Have any other notable directors been overlooked this year?
