Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!
We kick off today with what was easily the biggest highlight of this morning’s Golden Globes Awards: Jodie Foster’s emotional, and sometimes befuddling (seriously, just check out Mel Gibson’s look of WTF at 04:27) acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award
This highlight was trailed closely by Bill Clinton, a president impeached for perjury introducing Lincoln, a film about a president most well known for his honesty. Oh the irony.
If you’ve ever wanted to see a black and white photo of James Dean pretending to punch Rock Hudson’s in the man jewels, then this gallery of the Best of Behind The Scenes Photos is the one for you. And even if testicular pugilism is not your thing, there are still a whole wad of pretty amazing looks at some of cinema’s biggest movies.
I’m pretty sure that only a fraction of a second after it was first announced that Lucasfilm would be making more Star Wars films, the cries of “Joss Whedon for director” went up just like it seems to do for every film ever announced. But the fan favourite director has revealed that he only thought about it for a second or two.
“When I heard that I was like, “I wonder… no, I really can’t do that. Oh, I already have a job.” I wouldn’t clear the Avengers. I’m having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn’t imagine not doing it.”
That doesn’t mean that Whedon hasn’t given some thought already to what his version of Star Wars would be like though.
“I’d like to see a little edge. We all missed the Han of it. It got very portentous, which was justified by the story, but I think we’d all like to see a little anarchy in the mix.”
You hear that George Lucas? Anarchy not Anakin!
Michael Fassbender has a big head. No, that’s not a dirty joke about his naked performance in Shame. I’m talking about this first look photo from Frank, in which he plays the titular role of an enigmatic indie band leader. Who wears a giant plastic doll head on tour. Yeah. The pic shows Fassbender flanked by co-stars Domnall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhall, who are members of the band. The film is directed by Jon “The Men Who Stare At Goats” Ronson, so expect this one to get a bit kooky.
Production Weekly is reporting that the Michael Bay produced, Jonathan Liebesman directed Ninja Turtles will start filming in April. That’s April the month, not April the news reporter, you sickos.
Deadline is reporting that Step Up 5, the inevitable sequel, is currently in production and apparently Summit Entertainment is in negotiations with screenwriter John Swetnam to pen a screenplay that would see the cast of the entire franchise join up again. Firstly, Ex-dance-ables! Secondly, since when do the Step Up movies have screenwriters?
Arnold Schwarzenegger held a special screening of Last Stand this weekend pass (alas, no cars were crushed by a tank. Damn you Ahnuld, for setting a precedent now), and while there he provided an update on The Legend of Conan, saying that filming will likely get under way later this year in New Zealand. The Governator also shared how the Universal felt that “the previous regime has missed the boat” and how they’re going to give this Conan movie the attention and support it deserves.
If you’re looking at the trailers for Sam Raimi’s upcoming Oz the Great and Powerful, and thinking that this just ain’t your Wizard of Oz, well, then you’d be wrong. As ComingSoon.net proves with this list of descriptions for all the characters in the movies, as well as the portion of L. Frank Baum’s original story that they take their inspiration from. Well at least for some of them. I don’t recall that guy from Scrubs being there.
Despite past reports that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 would shooting off of a screenplay by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides co-writer Terry Rossio, Variety is reporting that Jeff “Catch Me If You Can” Nathanson has been brought on board to take a crack at the script. It’s unclear whether or not Rossio’s script has been sent to Davey Jones’ locker and Nathanson is starting from scratch or whether Nathanson is just taking a new pass at the existing script. Either way, I’m holding out hope that it will feature a young Leonardo DiCaprio lying his way into the captaincy of the Black Pearl.
Steven Segal owns a bulletproof kimono. I have absolutely no idea what to do with this knowledge, so I’m just going to leave it hanging out here for all y’all to see.
Looks like Morgan Freeman is doing his best Morpheus impersonation as he engages with a manacled Tom Cruise in this new image for Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion. Don’t take the blue pill, Tom! It gives you a giant erection!
Speaking of Oblivion, just he like he did with Tron Legacy, director Joseph Kosinski has paired up with a couple of world class musicians to score his film. In this case, M83, and the French electro maestros have released this new clip showing off a drum battle that they will be using for one of the film’s action sequences.
