Extras! Trey Parker and Matt Stone start their own studio, Aaron Johnson will kick some Godzilla ass, Anne Hathaway is taming some shrews, Iran’s making an anti-Argo, and Seth McFarlane gets drunk at the Oscars! Plus much more!

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

We get off to a bit of a crood start today. No, that’s not a spelling mistake. I’m talking about Dreamworks’ The Croods and this new sneak peek clip from the upcoming animated film.

Just like resident cranky old man Darryn, Marvel wants to Punish some kids. Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television, has revealed that they are working on an animated feature film based on everybody’s favourite skull attired vigilante, The Punisher. Not much more details were forthcoming, except that it would also feature Black Widow and that there are 15 other titles also in various stages of development, most of them unannounced thus far.

Just like their three fingered protagonist, Ubisoft appears to running at full tilt with nothing standing in their way. Keeping the momentum of the production going, they’ve announced a writer to adapt their Assassin’s Creed videogame: Michael Leslie. No, I don’t know who he is either. According to reports though, he is an up-and-coming scribe well known in the English stage theatre circles and has also penned a number of short films. In case you forgot, Michael Fassbender will starring and producing the adaptation.

After winning the Golden Globe, Ben Affleck’s Argo – the true (but truly ridiculous) story of how the CIA faked a movie in order to get into a hostile Iran to rescue some hostages taken from the American Embassy – has proven itself a commercial and critical heavyweight, but wait!.. A new challenger has appeared! The Iranian government has announced that in response to the award winning film, they will now make their own film, titled The General Staff, also set during the 1979 hostage crisis. The film’s writer-director Ataollah Salmanian, said that he used eyewitness accounts to pen the “big production” and that it will be “an appropriate response to the ahistoric [lacking historical validity] film Argo.”

Oh, it’s on now, dawg!

Here’s the newly released eye-catching teaser poster for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and unsurprisingly, it’s covered in fire. What, you were expecting snow cones?

One of  two of the Internet’s Genesis Pits, Reddit produces some amazing threads. One such thread had Redditor James Erwin ask the simple question, “What if a unit of U.S. Marines are transported back in time and forced to do battle with Roman legions?” The question kicked off an epic narrative that eventually got the attention of Hollywood, and now it looks like work is officially beginning on turning Erwin’s concept into a feature film, titled Rome, Sweet Rome. Warner Bros have now appointed Apollo 18 scribe Brian Miller with the task of turning the thread/story into a feature film script.

And in case you’re wondering, the other Internet Genesis Pit would be 4Chan, but I wouldn’t advise you to go there unless you’re wearing a full haz-mat suit.

Looks like Anne Hathway, fresh from her Golden Globe winning performance in Les Miserablesis going to be dreaming a dream right into a new adaptation of Shakespearean comedy The Taming of the Shrew. Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady) will be penning the script that will see the story transplanted to mid-20th century Italy. Hathaway would play the lead Katherina, who’s life gets a swift kick in the pants when she is forced into marriage with the suave Petruchio.

Although I haven’t played the latest one, I used to love the ‘Need for Speed’ games. I used to play them day and night. Speaking of “Day and Night”, American hip hop artist Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi has now joined the cast of  the upcoming feature film adaptation of the popular videogame franchise.

How you like them segues?

Last week we saw all the claymation faces of all the giants, but now it’s the turn of the tiny humans in this newly released banner for Jack The Giant Slayer. And yes, the tagline for that banner – for a movie titled Jack the GIANT Slayer – is indeed “Something giant is coming”. Hey face, meet palm.

A while back there were some rumours going around that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be attached to Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot. But then again, there seems to be rumours of JGL attached to just about every project, and just like most of them, they turn out be to absolute bunkum. What is looking likely though is that Kick Ass and Savages star Aaron Johnson may be taking the lead going up against the giant radioactive lizard. Legendary pictures were also considering Henry Cavill, Caleb Landry Jones and Scott McNairy, but Johnson has now become the favoured frontrunner. Whomever gets the role, it’s believed that he will play some sort of soldier character who will have to deal with not only the titular Godzilla but other monsters as well.

There’ve been a smattering of news scattered around the web about Zombieland 2. Well, if you’ve been holding your breath waiting for concrete details about a sequel to Ruben Fleischer’s zombie-comedy, well then the director is here to tell you that you’re probably going to die of asphyxiation.

“I hate to do it, but I can say that there’s no immediate plans to make the movie.  There’s no script, really, so the likelihood of it happening is slim.  But I would not wanna put a nail in that coffin.”

Mark this day on your calendars, folks. Have a good look around so that you can tell your children one day exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard this. MTV has come out in defense of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and specifically the savaging it received in this year’s Razzies, and – here’s the ground breaking part you’ve been waiting for – I actually agree with them.

According to the New York Times, South Park funnymen Matt Parker and Trey Stone have taken the mountains of money they’ve made from making fun of Barbara Streisand and are in the process of using it to open up their own film studio, titled Important Studios, to develop new TV, theatre and film projects, including a feature film adaptation of their award winning musical The Book of Mormon. I expect that fans of the duo have all just discovered the brown note.

With Tina Fey and Amy Poehler absolutely killing it as hosts at yesterday’s Golden Globes, there’s a lot of pressure on Seth McFarlane, who will be hosting the biggest show in Tinsel Town, the Academy Awards, to not suck. And he’s off to a great start already, based on these 5 –  yes 5! – new promo videos released via the Oscar’s official Youtube page.
