Zack Snyder is NOT making a Star Wars spin-off movie. Sigh

Well crap. Right now you should have been fanboy-foaming at the mouth as you read this crazy article I typed up last night all about how Zack “I love slow-mo” Snyder was developing a new standalone, spin-off Star Wars movie. Instead, I woke up this morning to find breaking news that that actually isn’t the case. Ergh. Stupid reality getting in the way of a good story.

And trust me, it was a good story: the spinoff was going to be based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. But just because Snyder isn’t making it doesn’t mean that somebody else isn’t.

Now the original breaking news…er, broke last night when the usually reliable Vulture revealed that they had an extremely good source, close to the production, who claimed that Snyder was developing a new Star Wars film. Now Snyder was actually part of the initial group of directors who promptly stuck their filmmaking heads in the sand as soon as the new trilogy was announced, but this wouldn’t be part of the new trilogy. It would be a standalone, non-numbered film that would take sometime after Episode VI and run alongside the new trilogy. Now if you’ll recall, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated last year that “our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years,” and the only that would be possible was through spin-off standalone movies.

The kicker here, as mentioned above, was that Snyder’s film would be based on Seven Samurai, a film that George Lucas has publicly praised as one of his all time favourites several times. Now that classic film, which saw a village hire a group of samurai to protect them against bandits, has been remade several times – most famously with the Western The Magnificent Seven – and influenced many others – even Pixar’s A Bug’s Life – so swapping out Ronin and katana for Jedi and lightsabers? Yes, freaking please!

Now, if you recall, I mentioned initially that this story was refuted this morning. That was courtesy of Snyder’s rep who stated that “while he is super flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars.” So if that’s the case, why did I just type up a story to tell you about something that is NOT happening? Am I that sad and lonely of a man?

Firstly, don’t answer that last question. Secondly, Vulture is still sticking by their story. They’re saying that they have close sources that said that Snyder definitely met with Lucasfilm execs about it recently. It could be that Snyder’s schedule is currently just too full so he had to pass, or that after the disappointment of that glorified CG tech demo, Sucker Punch, the studio is first going to see if the director can redeem himself with Man of Steel, before handing him a new fan favourite franchise.

The point is, according to Vulture, somebody is making a Jedi samurai movie. Jedi samurai. If that doesn’t get you excited, then I hate to break it to you, but you’re dead.
