TERMINATOR finds a new writer

So what’s next for the Terminator franchise? After being sent back in time, the T-McG director bot attacked the franchise with 2009’s Terminator: Salvation, which had some great ideas mixed in with some terrible set-pieces and story-beats.

Still, you can’t keep a good killer robot franchise down and sooner or later, a new Terminator film will be constructed. And to keep Judgement Day going, it looks like Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier will be holding the fate of mankind in their pens for the next Terminator sequel.

Does the name ring a bell? It doesn’t? Okay then. Kalogridis happens to have worked with series creator James Cameron before, most notably on his sci-fi epic Avatar. She’s also the writer and producer behind the critically acclaimed Shutter Island, as well as the scribe behind Oliver Stone’s Alexander. So two out of three ain’t bad then for this writer. As for Patrick Lussier, the writer also happens to have directed a film before, in the form of Dracula 2000. I have no idea what that movie was even about, to be honest.

Lussier has also had a varied career, taking on projects such as Drive Angry, My Bloody Valentine and White Noise 2: The Light. Erm, OK then. So wth two writers on board, a new Terminator is on the way then. Financed by Megan Ellison, she paid quite a few pretty pennies for the rights to the film franchise. Ellison also happens to have financed more indie-flavoured films such as Zero Dark Thirty and The Master in the past, films which happen to be contenders for various awards this year.

Quite frankly, I’m not certain which direction the Terminator franchise can be taken in. We’ve seen past, present and future explored  already, while the TV series decided to go sideways with the property. My bet? It’s going to get a reboot, only this time, the Terminator will be something…that you have never seen before! Like a human resistance fighter finding himself sharing a hovel with a reprogrammed T-800.

One is a freedom fighter, the other is a killer with finger-lighters, they’re just an odd pair with only fifty percent hair, they’re Kyle Reese and the T-800!

Hollywood, you have my number. Let’s do lunch sometime.

It’s not a Terminator movie without Sarah Conner, they’ve made this mistake since T3. Having Arnie onscreen blowing things up is not enough, it needs the human survival element, it needs to be based on defying your fate.

Another “dark future war” or another “protector sent back through time” is not enough.

        True. With T:Salvation I felt like I wasn’t watching a Terminator movie.
