With production on 47 Ronin going about as smoothly as a pothole filled Johannesburg road, it’s still anyone’s guess as to whether or not Universal’s much delayed 3D samurai epic would have been better off committing seppuku. One thing we do know for sure though? Keanu Reeves is definitely not Asian.

All the news we’ve received thus far has been pretty off-putting, like how first-time feature film director Carl Rinsch may have been a bit out of his depth, or how Universal wasn’t happy that their big Hollywood star was missing from the film’s final battle (Woah!). Now we finally have something non-negative in the form of 7 newly released promo posters.

From ancient Japan’s most enduring tale, the epic 3D fantasy-adventure “47 Ronin” is born. Keanu Reeves leads the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the leader of the 47 Ronin. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors.

“47 Ronin” is helmed by visionary director Carl Erik Rinsch (“The Gift”). Inspired by styles as diverse as Miyazaki and Hokusai, Rinsch will bring to life the stunning landscapes and enormous battles that will display the timeless Ronin story to global audiences in a way that’s never been seen before.

Personally, I’d have to say that the one with the red birds forming the “47” has to be my favourite out of the lot. Though I think the others aren’t really done justice by these low-resolution versions. That being said, I don’t think I care very much for crayon coloured, tie-dyed kimonos.

We’ll finally get to see if all the production headaches were worth it when 47 Ronin opens on Christmas Day, 2013.
