I’m actually kind of sad that Tim Burton never got to make his Superman Lives movie. By all accounts, it would have been crazy, weird and a 90 minute advert to sell more Superman toys. But dammit, it would have been worth it just to see Nicolas Cage as Clark Kent/Superman!
Precious few photos or video have escaped from the pre-production sets and wardrobes of that project, before Warner Bros shelved the whole deal. But here’s a new one of Cage in a more traditional outfit, plus, details on how to actually get a documentary made about the legendary film that never was.
First off, some of you will be familiar of this outfit that Nic Cage would have been wearing later in the film, with some hippy hair thrown in for good measure.
But here’s a look at Cage in a more traditional outfit that sported a familiar Kryptonian emblem. And by familiar, I mean that Bruce Wayne is going to be pissed off that someone stole one of his Batman Forever outfits. It’s a black and white photo, so no idea as to what the colours were on that outfit, but just look at it.
Fake muscles and a receding hairline be damned, Nic Cage actually looks like he can go toe to toe with the worst that the galaxy can offer. It’s typical 90s ideas for superhero costumes, but I still kind of dig it. Here’s another photo from the DCU Movie page that hinted towards the look of the film.
Am I the only person who would like to see a documentary made about a film that never was? Apparently not, because Jon “Metalocalypse” Schnepp is looking to do exactly that. He’s calling it The Death of Superman Lives: What happened? and like everyone with an idea that needs cash, he’s taken it to Kickstarter. Schnepp is looking to fund a doccie that will talk to pretty much everyone that was involved in the canned film, from production crew through to producers, Nic Cage and Tim Burton himself.
Right now, he’s got half the scratch that he needs to make the doccie, with 39 days left to go. I’m going to throw down some cash to watch it, how about you? And to end this post, some here’s some more concept art that happens to be lurking in the dark corners of the internet, from Superman Lives;
