HomeUncategorizedWORLD OF WARCRAFT gets a new director! And you’ll be over the moon when you see who it is! Kervyn Cloete January 31, 2013 Uncategorized You would think that with a licence to print money franchise like World of Warcraft, the world’s most popular MMORPG (for the noobs that’s Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game or as I like to call it, Muhmorpurhgurh), folks would have been clamoring over themselves trying to turn it into a movie as soon as possible. But you have to realize that for that to happen, a few people would actually have to stop playing it for longer than just a toilet break every 4 days, and we all know that it ain’t happening. But now, 6 long years after it was first announced, it looks like we’re finally getting some proper commitment as a new release date has been announced as well as a director: Duncan Jones. Jones, son of legendary musician David Bowie, is the amazingly talented young sci-fi director responsible for the absolutely brilliant Moon as well as the not quite as brilliant but still flipping good Source Code. THR reports that he would be directing the live-action adaptation of the fantasy video game for Legendary Pictures and Universal off a previously announced script by Charles Leavitt, which is being kept closely under wraps. This is going to be quite the leap up for Jones in terms of scope. Moon cost just $1 million to make and essentially had just 3 actors. Source Code may have expanded the cast considerably and cost $35 million, but it’s still pretty shy of the projected $100 million for WOW, which will probably feature just about every type of fantasy character you can dream up (We’ve sort of already seen what a WOW movie would look like with that kitchen sink final battle in Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) Now if any of you had looked up long enough from your video game cocaine over the years to notice, you may remember that this is not the first time a director has been attached to a WOW adaptation. Back in 2009, fan favourite filmmaker Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy, Evil Dead trilogy, Drag Me To Hell) was pegged to direct, but after hemming and hawing for 3 years, he finally dropped out of the project completely last year. The difference between that scenario and this latest announcement is that it looks like somebody is finally taking this thing seriously as Jones has been given a 2015 release window to aim for. That last announcement confirms that 2015 will indeed be the year of the Nerdapocalypse; The Avengers 2, Justice League, Star Wars: Episode VII, Avatar 2, The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun, Fantastic Four, Ant-Man, Neon Genesis Evangelion and now this. And no, I also don’t know how I’m going to make it through that year without a geek fueled aneurysm. Now they just need to convince Bradley Cooper (since he’s in just about every movie lately) to play the role of LEEEEEEERROOOOOOOY JEEEEEEEENKIIIIIIIIINS! Then again, if it was entirely handled in-house you’d probably need to be logged-in to Battle.net to watch it… Lardus Agree that in-house CG would have been great. Live action? Where do I sign up for auditions as “random dude gets cleaved by Saurfang in first scene”? Grant Hancock What !? …Not Jar Jar Abrhams ?! ElNicko 2015 should be an INCREDIBLE Year !!
