Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Hey you! Yeah, you with the face! Tired of being yelled at by your parents for just for being a good for nothing layabout who just crashes on their couch and eats their food instead of using that political science/philosophy/art history degree to get a job? They just don’t understand you, right? They just don’t see how you’ve just been waiting for the right challenge to properly stimulate you. Well, we’ve found that challenge in this great career opportunity that will have you travelling the world to new countries (to take them over), leading teams (in the defense of secret underwater bases), and shouldering responsibility (and possibly surface to air rocket launchers).

For those of you who still haven’t figured it out yet, that’s a new viral ad for G.I. Joe: Retaliation highlighting the Joes’ traditional enemy, Cobra.

Now that Tina Fey is an unemployed TV actress, you can expect her to focus on her movie career. And first up she’s going to be teaming up with Jason Moore, director of the unexpectedly entertaining Pitch Perfect, which took a number of viewers, particularly those possessing testicles, by surprise. The project is called The Nest and will be penned by Fey’s 30 Rock and SNL collaborator Paula Pell. It deals with two thirty-something sisters (one of whom will be played by Fey) who spend one last weekend together in their old house, after they learn that their parents have put it up for sale. Cue funny sisterly fighting and ensuing hijinks.

Production officially kicked off down in Oz yesterday for The Rover. Wait… Am I the only one that has never heard of The Rover? And based on the cast, crew and synopsis behind it, I feel like I really should have (or maybe I did but I just really need to stop drinking at work). The Rover is a slow burn sci-fi thriller written and directed by David Michod (Animal Kingdom) off a story he conceived with Joel Edgerton, and stars Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson.

The film is “set in the Australian desert, in a dangerous and damaged near future. Eric (Pearce) has left everything, everyone and every semblance of human kindness behind him when a gang of desperate criminals steals his last possession. Eric sets off on a ruthless mission to track them down, forced along the way to enlist the help of Rey (Pattinson), the naïve and injured junior member of the gang who was left behind in the chaos of the gang’s most recent robbery.”

A new poster has been released for director Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen (not to be confused with the “terrorists invade the White House” movie, Roland Emmerich’s White House Down). I guess this would be an inappropriate time to break into song with “The roof! The roof! The roof is on fire!”?

While the idea of a movie based on the Need for Speed franchise may seem like a creatively bankrupt one, that’s just hoping to steal some Fast and Furious money, you can’t deny that they’re assembling a rather decent cast for it. Thus far its just been all young, up-and-coming names like Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper and Imogen Poots but it’s time to add some old school flavour, as THR reports that Micheal Keaton has joined the cast as a “reclusive and eccentric host of an underground supercar race where he invites the best drivers from around the world.”

In what was probably a case of “You damn well better or no sweet lovin’ for you!”, Eva Mendez has joined the cast of real life beau Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut How To Catch a Monster. Mendez joins Christina Hendricks and Bob Mendelsohn in the dark fantasy thriller about a boy and his mother who discover a secret path to a magical underground city. Mendez is billed as playing Cat, “a prominent figure of the Big Bad Wolf Club”, which judging by the fantastical nature of the story may just end up being very literally named.

If you don’t feel like parting with your hard earned money to go see Movie 43, and by all accounts that might be a pretty wise decision, then head on over to Comedy Central where they’re giving away tickets to a special advanced screening at Monte Casino tomorrow night.

Cracked has put together this sidesplitting list of 21 Movie Sequels Too Awesome To Exist and unless you have an allergy to things that make you smile (which probably also means that you work at the post office), I would suggest checking it out. Here’s my favourite of the lot.

Sean Bean, the Hollywood version of South Park’s Kenny, has joined Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis for the Wachowski Siblings’ next sci-fi project Jupiter Ascending. The film will see Kunis as a lowly Russian immigrant who discovers that she “possesses the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe and is therefore a threat to her otherwise immortal rule.”

No word on what character Bean would play, but that’s really not that important as all we need to know is how he’s going to die in the first act.

No matter how good people are, occasionally they just do bad things. To prove this look no further than Pajiba’s 10 Cringe-Worthiest Performances By This Year’s Oscar Nominated Actors. And for the record, I refuse to accept that Nine actually exists. Daniel Day-Lewis has a flawless track record, and I don’t care what any of you say.

Speaking of talented people who make really crappy movies, Robert De Niro was being interviewed by US talk show host Katie Couric earlier this week as part of the promo for The Silver Linings Playbook, when he was asked how he feels working with director David O. Russell on a project that is personally invested in (Russell’s son suffers from similar mental problems as Bradley Cooper’s character in the film).

When De Niro responded though, the once tough guy showed off his soft side, as he got rather emotional about it.

You can now follow the Yellow Click Road to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz, as Walt Disney Pictures has launched the official website for Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful. The site has all sorts of interactive activities and games which is described as follows in the official press release:

Like any good circus, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: compose your own music, play with a fun photo booth and create your own movie with a zoetrope. The path to Oz also involves confronting an ominous tornado; surviving it completes the journey, enabling fans of the movie to watch an exclusive unreleased clip from the film.

This mash-up trailer for The Avengers and the John Hughes classic The Breakfast Club is rather cool (despite the bad lip synching), so don’t be surprised that once you’ve watched it, you feel the insatiable urge to go walk on a football field before punching the air in triumph. And then Hulk smashing everything else.
