THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY hits DVD and Blu-Ray next month

Confession: I never saw The Hobbit during the holiday season. But for good reason! And not just because I was laying around in my underwear eating beans and operating a PS3 controller with my tongue! See, I was waiting for the full, full film to appear. If there’s one thing that director Peter Jackson is good at, it’s saving content that never made the final cut for the dozen or so DVDs that follow. Just ask Kervyn. He owns about five copies of Return of the King right now.

And here’s what your bank account can expect when the HD copies of the Middle Earth adventure returns to a smaller screen near you.

Peter Jackson’s first film in The Hobbit trilogy arrives March 19, and a week earlier if you prefer to do the digital download video on demand tango. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will release on Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack and 2-Disc DVD Special Edition.

Each disc version will have around two hours of extra content, as well as a sneak peek at the upcoming second movie, The Desolation of Smaug. That preview will be hosted by Peter Jackson himself on the franchise website,  and will be accessible through an Ultraviolet code found in retail copies of the movie.

The full suite of Peter Jackson’s Production Videos included on the discs comprise of:

  •  Start of Production
  •  Location Scouting
  •  Filming in 3D
  •  Post-production Overview
  •  Wellington World Premiere

Of course, it’s worth nothing that this is merely the first release of the first film. Which means that in a year’s time, there’ll be an even deluxier set out there, waiting for to throw down some of your precious…cash.

Yes, I’ll save my money for the Special Extended editions… or even the special special extended editions…

Ha! I’ll wait for the extended 6-movie bundle in three years.

I hope the Special Extended editions come out with a figurine of some sorts. As I could have never afford the LOTR Special Extended editions when it came out, so many years ago.
