John Cusack is the only safety measure in THE NUMBERS STATION

For those of you not familiar with numbers stations, they are mysterious broadcasts that can be heard around the world that broadcast strings of numbers, with nobody really sure what they are for or why they are used. Most likely of military origin, they remain a modern mystery but it seems like John Cusack may have an answer for us with his new action thriller, The Numbers Station.

I have to be honest, this is the first time this film is making a blip on my radar but since I’ve always been interested in this particular conspiracy theory, I wasted no time to check out the trailer. Before we get there though, here’s the synopsis from Comingsoon:

After his latest mission goes disastrously wrong, veteran CIA black ops agent Emerson Kent is given one last chance to prove he still has what it takes to do his job. His new assignment: guarding Katherine, a code operator at a top-secret remote CIA “Numbers Station” where encrypted messages are sent and received. When an elite team of heavily armed assailants lays siege to the station, Emerson and Katherine suddenly find themselves in a life-or-death struggle against an unknown enemy. With the station compromised and innocent lives at stake, they must stop the deadly plot before it’s too late.

Here’s the trailer:

Without judging the film too harshly before I haven’t seen it, I am a little  disappointed with the direction the film is taking regarding the number stations. I think I might have preferred if the use of the stations was more of a mystery that gets revealed as the film goes on because, to be fair, military coded messages is the least creative use they could have dreamed up for it, even though it is most likely more accurate.

That said, I’m mostly just nitpicking as the film does seem to be quite a bit of fun. I’ve heard mention of the film being compared to Safe House, but I’m not sure if that is quite accurate either. It is good to see John Cusack in a film again and while Malin Ackerman still has to make up for her part in Rock of Ages, I’m sure both will play well of each other.

We’ll have to wait at least another two months before we’ll be able to see how Cusack and Ackerman get out of the sticky situation they find themselves. All I know is, I’m going to be holding thumbs that The Numbers Station isn’t just another generic thriller. Less The Raven, more Grosse Point Blank please, Mr. Cusack!

What do you guys think? Will this film do the mystery justice, or is it just using it as a base for another by the book thriller? I’ll pick door number one, please!

Totally agree with you, dude. Leaving the numbers station as a mystery to be solved instead of a jump off point for the plot would’ve been miles better

Someone should make a meme about how Cusack keeps pulling that face on posters…
