Martin Scorsese and Andrew Lau team up for REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGONS

It’s always so surprising to many folks when they learn that after decades of teaching us that you don’t ever mess with fast talking Italians, especially if they’re used to shine your shoes, that Martin Scorsese won his first (and since then only) Best Director Oscar for The Departed.

What surprises folks even more, was that The Departed was actually a remake of Andrew Lau’s Hong Kong gangster movie, Infernal Affairs. But now it looks like Scorsese is going pay back the favour of borrowing Lau’s movie, by helping him produce his first big budget Hollywood production.

THR reports that Scorsese will be producing Lau’s next film, titled Revenge of the Green Dragons, which I have to admit is an awful title. Title offences to his ancestors aside, this actually marks Lau’s second foray into Hollywood, but his 2008 Richard Gere starring English language debut The Flock, much like much of his work after doing his acclaimed Infernal Affairs trilogy (yes, there were three of them!), went straight to DVD without making much of a splash. But recently Lau found some of his former success with Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zen, which just goes to show that when given the choice, always make a movie that features Donnie Yen punching people instead of a white maned ex-gigolo.

Green Dragons will be penned by Michael Di Jiacomo, who in turn based it off an article in the New Yorker about the American Chinese underworld. THR reports that the story revolves around “two immigrants fighting their way up the Green Dragons gang, and then their struggle to confront their former associates after one of them is cast beyond the pale for his trysts with his clan chieftain.”

Filming is expected to kick off in the States in April.

Neat. And it is criminal that Scorcese only ever got one director’s Oscar.
