Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Hey you. Yeah you. GET OVER HERE! and watch this new teaser trailer for season 2 of Mortal Kombat Legacy, Kevin Tancharoen’s rebooted adaptation of the popular video game series. The new season will see the additions of Mark Dacascos (Crying Freeman) as Kung Lao, Harry Shum, Jr. (“Glee”) as Kuai Liang, Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) as Johnny Cage and Brian Tee (The Wolverine) as Liu Kang, among others. Cary Tagawa will be also reprising the role of Shang Tsung, which he made famous in Paul W.S. Anderson’s 90’s Mortal Kombat feature film. To be honest though, they had me at Mark Dacascos.

There’s no word yet, on exactly when Tancharoen will be tackling the feature film version of all this, but until then here’s that trailer and the blurb to go with it.

“The footage showcases the non-stop action of the continuing saga as Liu Kang and Ermac join the ranks of fighters introduced in the hugely successful first season. The trailer features first glimpses into the rivalries and histories of these fierce warriors as Raiden and his recruits clash against the dark forces of Outworld in the epic battle for Earthrealm!”

As you may have seen earlier, I did not have fun at the cinema this weekend. If like me, you watched one of the greatest action heroes reduced to a balding, Tourette’s spouting superman, then I offer some salve in the form of Guardian’s look at Bruce Willis’ Five Best Moments..

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who, depending on your age group, is either best known as that girl who kicked vampire ass in Buffy or who had her ass kicked by the ratings in Ringer, will join Robin Williams on the small screen in a new CBS comedy pilot titled “Crazy Ones”.

According to reports the show will revolved around “the dynamics between a father named Simon Roberts (Good Will Hunting Oscar winner Robin Williams) and his daughter (Gellar) and is set in the world of advertising.”

Here’s the new UK trailer Last Exorcism II, a movie that hopefully turns out to be less ridiculous than its title (So it’s the second Last Exorcism now?)

Looks like Warner Bros’ Justice League troubles may result in a delay in their planned reboot of the Batman franchise as well. Seeing as how it was pretty widely accepted that they would have wanted to introduce the new Caped Crusade in JL, some of you may want to file this bit of news under “Duh!”. But it turns out the problem is not quite as simple as just waiting a few months while the JL house gets put in order, according to Batman-On-Film’s sources:

“If Superman is huge, then they’ve bought themselves some time and will have a franchise to hang their hat on for seven, eight years. The need for Batman won’t be as great, and [the reboot] of that franchise can wait until the Superman trilogy is done. If all of that comes to pass, it’s estimated we may not see a new Batman film until 2019.”

And keeping things superheroic, it’s been reported that Game of Thrones and (unfortunately) Conan star Jason Momoa has tested for the role of Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Shave him down, paint him green and stick some giant knives in his hand? Yeah, I can see it.

Apparently, there have been unconfirmed reports that Isaiah Mustafa and Dave Bautista’s names are also in the mix. I’ve been a fan of Momoa since his “Stargate Atlantis” days, and despite being saddled with a mediocre movie in Conan, his career still seems to be on the up and up. I personally would prefer him for this role, not just because I think he’s better suited for it, but this could also be the role to turn him into a household name.

Speaking of Guardians of the Galaxy, of all of Marvel’s upcoming cinematic adaptations, it’s probably the least well known among the non-comic book fanboys (A giant gun toting, cigar smoking space raccoon with a mouth like Eddie Murphy back when he was still wearing full body, red leather suits, doesn’t exactly track well on studios’ famed four quadrants) which is why Collider have put together this rather handy Beginner’s Guide to Marvel’s Strangest Comic Book Adaptation.

We’ve already had talk earlier today that one old han(d) might be returning, but now composer extraordinaire John Williams indicates that he’s ready to pick up that little stick thingie that conductors use (hey, I never studied music, OK?) for the new trilogy. Williams made the announcement during a recent performance, where he played some of the most memorable works of his career.

“We’re about to play Star Wars [audience interrupts with cheers] and each time we play it, I’m reminded of the first time we played it decades ago. Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I’d have to revisit the themes…and years later another trilogy. Now we’re hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016…so I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George…[more cheers].”

William’s work has become so intrinsic to the Star Wars franchise, that I don’t think I even considered for a second that he wouldn’t be scoring the new movies.

Break out the fava beans and a nice chianti, the first teaser trailer for “Hannibal” – the new NBC drama series about everybody’s favourite face munching serial killer Hannibal Lecter, of course made famous by Sir Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs and Brian Cox in Manhunter – is finally here.

The show, which “explores the early relationship between the renowned psychiatrist and his patient, a young FBI criminal profiler, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers,” starts on Thursday on NBC and stars Madds Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Valhalla Rising) as Lecter with Hugh Dancy (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Hysteria) as FBI agent Will Graham.

It’s been so long since we’ve heard anything about the proposed Spawn remake, that many assumed it was just stuck in development… ahem… hell. The 1997 feature film adaptation of the hell-bound superhero comic was…. well, Spawn had a very nice cape, lets leave it at that. But way back in 2009, creator Todd McFarlane revealed that he’s begun work on a new script for a reboot of the franchise. Turns out, 4 years later, that he’s not only still working on it, but that he’s piqued the attention of somebody major.

“I continue writing pages here and there. I have a guy waiting in the sidelines, an Academy Award-winning actor. Every three weeks he’s on the phone going, ‘Todd, where’s the script? Todd, where’s the script?’ I can’t say who it is. You could [narrow it down].

“He came out to the office. He gave me his pitch, and I gave him mine. The pitch I gave was that we could do ten of these for the next ten years and he wouldn’t have to be 22 for the rest of his life.”

Who could it be? Spawn’s civilian identity, Al Simmons, was black, so that should help to narrow it down a bit. Could this be the triumphant return of Cuba Gooding Jr? Has he intentionally relegated himself to straight-to-DVD hell for the last decade all as part of his method acting preparations for this role?

Or could McFarlane have ditched the traditional Spawn and use the latest version of the character found in the comics, who is now white? In which case this would be like looking for a needle in a needle stack. While wearing boxing gloves.

McFarlane also told MTV that work had already begun on a new animated Spawns, which will have some big demonic shoes to fill if it’s to follow on from the much acclaimed HBO animated series that ran from 1997-1999.

“We have 90 minutes all set and ready to go, other than sending it to an animation house. We’ve done all the voice recordings, we’ve done all the backgrounds, so the technology is way better than it was a decade ago; there are some spectacular things we can do now that we weren’t able to when we were on HBO.”

Here’s the first clip for Dreamworks’ prehistoric family comedy The Croods, which doesn’t look quite as funny as I would have hoped but which I’ll still give a watch based on the quality of the voice cast alone: Nic Cage, Brad Pitt, Emma Stone, etc.

And we complain about movies getting a delayed release locally? 20 years after passing away from a drug overdose, River Phoenix’s last film, Dark Blood, finally received an international release at the Berlin Film Festival this week. Phoenix passed away 10 days before the end of production on the film that saw him as a troubled young widower who kidnaps the rich Hollywood couple of Jonathan Pryce and Judy Davis, while they’re on vacation in the Utah desert.

After Phoenix’s death, the film became the property of the insurance company, but director George Sluizer was able to rescue the film rolls from their vault before it got destroyed. However much to his dismay he discovered that some film that they had recorded had been taken, reportedly to be sold later as collector’s items. Recording voiceovers for the scenes that Phoenix never got a chance to finish, and re-editing around those that were missing, Sluizer was able to “put something together so that the material could be preserved in a proper form, rather than in a wastepaper basket”.

“The only thing I know is that some rolls have been seen or found in London somewhere. I guess between ’93 and ’99 some people have been looking at or taking material.”

“I’m missing about 25% of it, and we lack a number of scenes, but having shown it to a few people after I salvaged it, who raved about the performances, I felt safe enough to continue.”

With the Internet’s usual superspeed at jumping on puns, I’m actually quite surprised that it’s taken somebody this long to make a “Zero Dark Knight Thirty” clip, but it’s finally here and it’s funny as hell. So if Batman and interrogation are two of your favourite things, then…  well then, I suggest you seek some professional help, but first check out this clip.
