If there’s one thing that we need to do more news of, it’s the local movie scene. We’ve got a growing industry, and suffice to say, most of our talent is starting to shine through in movies that don’t rely on someone falling face-first into a pile of manure every five minutes. Right Leon Schuster? Here’s two such local films hitting cinemas soon. One is comedy, the other is dramatic. And they both look like they’re well worth the price of an admission ticket.
Fanie Fourie’s Lobola
First up, the comedy. Racial tension is something that won’t ever leave this country due oto our history, but hell, it can still make for some funny moments in life. Fanie Fourie’s Lobola takes advantage of that idea, as the Afrikaans fella falls in love with Dinky Magubane. Two different cultures, the same overbearing parents and a world apart.
Fanie has a dowry to pay though, and Dinky’s father wants a traditional Zulu lobola of 65 cows before he’ll give him his daughter’s hand in marriage. FFL looks solid, with some great actors, some fresh jokes and a pretty high-class production end. It stars Eduan Van Jaarsveld, Zethu Dlomo, Jerry Mofokeng, Marga Van Rooy, Motlatsi Mafatshe, Chris Chameleon, Yule Masiteng, Connie Chiume, Richard Van Der Westhuizen and Lilian Dube, with Henk Pretorius directing.

Little One
Up next is something much less light-hearted, as director Darrell Roodt is clearly going for the heart with Little One. Rape is a serious issue here, and one that is sadly also not being combatted well enough. Little One deals with that horrible crime, as a Lindiwe Ndlovu as a township lady who takes in a young rape victim, a little girl who was left for dead by her attackers.
Becoming closer to the girl, she soon starts her own investigation into the horrific incident that left her scarred, in a tale based on real life events. It’s “unapologetically South African”, according to the film committee that nominated it for a best foreign movie Oscar, but sadly, it’s not in the running this year for that award.
Little One is out April 26, and also stars Vuyelwa Msimang, Mutodi Neshehe, Nompumelelo Nyiyane,Luzuko Nqeto, Vicky Kente, Jonathan Taylor, Thami Baleka, Richard Lukunku and Sarah Kozwoloski.
