Go on a tour in these 2 new posters for THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

Gird your loins, because it looks like Lionsgate has just unveiled the first strike in what is certain to be an overwhelming promo campaign for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. That’s what happens when your first film makes $685 million worldwide and escalates your star’s status to the point where people now want to discuss her butt with her on late night talk shows.

The studio has taken an interesting slant on this first salvo though, blurring the line between reality and fiction in this set of “Victory Tour” posters.

For those of you unfamiliar with Suzanne Collins’ original novels, the “victory tour” is what Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) get sent on by the Capitol, after becoming joint winners of the 74th Hunger Games. They tour through the various districts, fake smiling and faux waving for the enjoyment of the citizens of the Capitol, but their presence eventually lights a fire in the downtrodden people they encounter. Yeah, that’s right. Katniss is going to shoot some arrows in some rich people’s faces.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Lionsgate will continue this meta style of ad campaign or whether they switch to a more traditional approach later on.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – which sees Francis Lawrence (Constantine, I Am Legend) replace original director Gary Ross in the big folding chair, and will see stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Donald Sutherland return, along with franchise newcomers Sam Clafin, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Jena Malone and Amanda Plummer – will be released on November 22, 2013.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

I wasn’t interested in this franchise, but the first movie makes you think about how the story will evolve.
