Guillermo Del Toro gives an update on DARK UNIVERSE

Right now, the future plans for a big budget adaptation of the Justice League is in a bit of a hot spot. Progress on that flick depends on the box office returns of Man of Steel, and actually getting a script which doesn’t smell worse than Kervyn’s socks.

One other DC team film which is in a healthier zone though? Guillermo Del Toro and his Justice League Dark project. One of his many, many, many, many products, Del Toro gave an update on the progress of that possible future film.

Originally nothing more than just a rumour, Del Toro liked the idea of grouping the darker and more supernatural elements of the DC comics universe so much, that he actually made said rumour a reality. Speaking to Total Film, Del Toro says that progress is looking good so far.

I am going to be presenting my storyline to DC and Warners of where I want to take this universe. We do have a writer, but until that is firmed up, I have to keep it a secret. I hope it happens.

It’s going really really well. It’s like meeting old friends. I grew up with Demon Etrigan, with Swamp Thing, with Deadman, so these are characters that are near and dear to my heart. I’d love to use the origins that are proper to each character. I love the idea of Jason Blood as a paladin and a knight…. I love the entire Constantine mythology, the Dead Man mythology, the Alex Holland Swamp Thing mythology. These are really rich things to well, and to dig.

I can’t think of many other directors right now who would actually be better suited to this kind of directing gig. Del Toro has proven that he knows how to handle balance the dark with the blockbuster in films such as Hellboy, and he’s got a style that would strengthen this potential project.

The current run of Justice League Dark comics stars occult detective and con artist John Constantine, dead for realsies possessor Deadman, the wrath of god in green underoos The Spectre, demonic rhymer The Demon, green pieces Swamp Thing and magician extraordinaire Zatanna.

C’mon universe, I take enough of a daily beating from life as it is, you owe me one. You owe me!
