Conspiracy Theory – What if I told you that there was more to the Matrix?

Remember The Matrix  You ought to. After all, it’s played more often than the seven PM news on TV and is still being imitated to this day. That 1999 film was a powerhouse of 3D camera angles and trippy sci-fi ideas about the nature of reality.

And then the two sequels came. While they were brilliant on a technical level, they went in arse-first when it came to the story, resulting in a mess of messianic proportions. But what if there was more to the story than what the notoriously camera-shy directing duo Wachowski siblings had intended.

Let’s rewind back to The Matrix: Reloaded. In that film, Neo can kick all kinds of digital ass thanks to him being “The One”, as well as having the power to reshape that universe, when given time to concetrate. He’s basically Superman, but in a trenchcoat. That power though, is exclusive to the virtual world of the Matrix.

That is, until he gets a DLC boost in the real world, by zapping the terabytes off of some drones in a dire situation. So what’s the deal with that? No one knows, and the Oracle brushes it off like it was yesterday’s news before Neo decides to head off and reenact Dragonball Z with Agent Smith.

So how does that work then? Well what if I told you that Neo was still in the Matrix, when he believed himself to actually be in the real world? A second layer, if you will. It would certainly explain how he had all of a sudden developed a new form of vision despite the fact that Smith had introduced his peepers to the business end of some high voltage, or how he could mind-splode machinery at will.

So what would the point even be of having a Matrix 2.0? It would make things far more efficient for the machines, for starters. By corralling errant personalities and plugging them into a seperate world that had very little impact on the Matrix itself, they could also keep an eye on those minds and purge that system when needed.

After all, the architect himself confirms that this happened several times already. And when you’re rebuilding a human society for the umpteenth time, you’re bound to notice that maybe someone else was here before you. It also serves as a credible plot device, instead of some lazy Deus Ex Machina that the Wachowski’s probably pulled from their asses.

Whoa.

That theory has been around for ages, but I suspect it is mostly just to make us geeks feel better about how balls-up The Matrix sequels were.

Um, wasn’t that the point of The Architect’s entire speech? He pretty much explains that doesn’t he? Or, at least that was the way I understood it, but I think I was the only person who didn’t fall asleep while he was talking…
