Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh has been flirting with retirement for a while now. And by flirting, I actually mean full on fresh-kissing (this sentence might also explain why my pre-marriage love life was such a wreck) as he’s said that he’s now done making movies. Whether this sticks or not remains to be seen as these Hollywood bigwigs tend to change their mind more than a chameleon standing on a Smarties box. If this retirement is legit though, then Soderbergh’s made-for-HBO Liberace biopic,  Behind the Candelabra, which sees Michael Douglas as the the flamboyant entertainer and Matt Damon as his lover Scott Thorson, will officially be his final film.

And while we’ve seen nothing about the film thus far except a couple pics reminding us that yes, the 70’s and 80’s really were the hairstyle equivalent of the Dark Ages, we now finally get a teaser trailer for it. Only, it’s really a teaser.

While Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead reboot is looking surprisingly good and violent, fans have still been clamouring for original creator Sam Raimi to finally make a sequel to his original trilogy. Up until now, the official response has always been one of ambivalence, but that all changed yesterday when during some press rounds about Raimi’s upcoming Oz the Great and Powerful, this little tidbit was tweeted by Disney UK on behalf of the director.

“I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.”

In case you’re wondering, said brother would be Ivan, who co-scripted a number of Raimi’s flicks, most recently being Drag Me To Hell.  Now naturally this bit of news sent fans into a frenzy, but Bleeding Cool wasn’t that cool with just those two sentences though and they followed up with the director himself for more details. What they found out though, was a little surprising.

“I would like to work on the script over the summer. That much is true. But the reason to come back and do it again is only that they’re making me, those fans… I am thinking about it, but a crowd goes ‘Come on Sam, do it!’ so I said ‘Okay, I guess I was talking to my brother about it.’ But I feel like I was pushed into saying that, a little bit.

“I was saying to Ivan ‘Why do they stay on this thing? Why do they keep at it?’ and he said ‘They want you to make a movie. You’re a filmmaker and your fans are asking you to make the movie. What are you, an idiot? Make the movie!’ I guess there’s something I don’t see. It makes sense when Ivan says it… I didn’t have a tremendous amount of passion until right now to bring to it.”

You guys do remember that the last time somebody forced Sam Raimi to make a sequel we ended up with emo-Toby Maguire, right?

There’s a new trailer out for Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion, which starts off all country and western but then abruptly gets all HAL-9000 by way of Michael Bay. Me like.

Looks like Halle Berry’s got her wish of once again starring in a movie that doesn’t look it should be introduced by that guy on eTV, as she’s confirmed that she will indeed be donning the white wig again and reprising her role as mutant weather-witch Storm in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Here’s how she responded to BlackTreeTV when asked if she’s bringing the character back.

“Yeah. The fans really love Storm. I’m really happy that it’s worked out that way. No matter what my part will be or won’t be, being part of it is always a good thing. I love it.”

Oh, Jennifer Lawrence. Another day, another reason to love you. A story has popped up online recently of the extremely natural and likeable starlet being interviewed backstage after her recent Best Leading Actress win at the Oscars, when suddenly, a wild Jack Nicholson appeared and…. Well, check it out for yourself.

You’ll be forgiven for not knowing the name Tim Miller now, but chances are that will all change pretty soon. The VFX guru and frequent David Fincher collaborator was the man responsible for the incredible ink and cables intro sequence to Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. He’s also the tech genius behind Fincher’s rather amazing “Halo 4” ad and will be helping him to direct the CG feature film adaptation of The Goon.

But just being Fincher’s Man Friday is not all he’s good for, as he’s also been tapped to direct the much delayed Deadpool movie for Fox, as well as an adaptation of Warren Ellis’ gritty modern day magician’s tale Gravel. And now he can add another project to his rather busy schedule of being awesome, as he’s been picked by Fox once again to direct new sci-fi flick Artemis. There have been no plot details forthcoming, but the Andrew Lobel penned tale is described as “a contained action thriller set in outer space”.

In view of the lack of info, here’s a reminder of just the type of visual badassery that Miller brings to the table.

We’ve known for a while now that Scott “Sinister” Derrickson would be writing and directing an adaptation of cyberpunk videogame Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill previously indicated that they’re not remaking the game verbatim, but rather will be exploring new ground. Exactly what that ground is, is unknown at this point, though it’s a safe bet that it’ll be very orange.

Now though we have a little bit more than just jokes about videogame colour palettes as it looks like the title of the film has been revealed, namely Deus Ex: Human Defiance. This was initially thought to be related to a new a game sequel when the name was registered by lawyers on behalf of publisher Square Enix. But some eagle eyed fans have spotted a domain site titled DeusExHumanDefianceFilm.com linked to the registration.

Looks like the marketing orcs over at Lionsgate are going to continue the meta-poster campaign they began with that pair of “Victory Tour” posters for The Hunger Games; Catching Fire that was released last week. This time, the posters masquerade as painted portraits featured in fake fashion magazine Capitol Couture and the first one to be released focuses on District 12 tribute chaperone and human peacock Effie Trinkett (Elizabeth Banks).

Here’s the blurb that goes with the poster release.

Once again, Capitol Couture pioneers fashion and culture with the first look at the Capitol Portraits. Always the escort, fashion-forward Effie Trinket is resplendent in her year 74 victory, clad head‑to‑heel in couture. Effie enchants in an exploding silhouette of chiffon and organza blooms.

It was with quite the sad face that I recently learned that shortly after winning their third well deserved visual effects Oscar, this time for the fantastically beautiful Life of Pi, California based FX studio Rhythm & Hues had to close their doors due to bankruptcy. What’s even sadder is that theirs is not a solitary tale. As big budget films have become more and more reliant on visual wizardry, more and more really talented design studios are finding themselves being fed into the Hollywood meat grinder, working themselves to a standstill for little or no reward. Check out this article from Empire on Hollywood’s VFX Crisis to see exactly what I mean.

For those of you who prefer pictures over well written words though (stop licking the paint, Darryn!), and would like a more visual representation of what films would be like without those design studios, then let me point you in the direction of new Tumblr blog, BeforeVFX, which does just what its name implies and posts behind the scenes shots of popular films pre-CGI trickery.

See that blue plush toy in this pic below? Rhythm & Hues turned that into a living, breathing Bengal effing tiger. And then still went bankrupt!

Here at The Movies, we’ve been known to give actor and acclaimed bird of prey impersonator Nicolas Cage a bit of schtick, but the fact of the matter is that he’s still quite the popular fellow with certain folks. Take the Brookline High School Quiz Show team for example, who showed off their uncaged emotions about the man on national TV.
