Steven Spielberg to develop Stanley Kubrick's NAPOLEON for TV

Legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick may be dead, but his legacy lives on. And not just in a traumatised Shelley Duvall either. Badumtish! Before he left for the director’s guild in the sky, Kubrick had been working on a new take on the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, a project that he started work on back in the 1970s, before he scrapped it a few years later. Still, Kubrick always had plans to do something about Napoleon.

However, a small case of fatal death in 1999 put the kibosh on those biopic plans, leaving behind a ton of work that would never be utilised. Until Steven Spielberg arrived that is.

While he won’t be making it his next film, Spielberg will instead be using Kubrick’s notes to create a TV miniseries based on the European conquerer and Waterloo hater. Spielberg is no stranger to television, as his World War 2 series Band of Brothers and The Pacific have been hits on the smaller screen, and will be followed by a third series dealing with the air force of that war.

According to THR, Spielberg will develop the series in conjunction with the Kubrick family, which should please the ghost of Kubrick, who was infamous for his relentless and endless quest for perfectionism in his films. It’s also not the first time that Spielberg has adapted some of Kubrick’s work, as he took on some of his sci-fi back in 2001 for A.I Artificial Intelligence.

Whatever the end result, it should be interesting to see Spielberg once again teaming up with Kubrick, Even if it posthumously done.

Big thanks to James Francis for the tip.

I’m keen to see the result. Spielberg and Kubrick were very close, which is why he finished AI after the director’s death (with the request and blessing of Kubrick’s wife). But AI was still VERY Kubrick. Napoleon would be more firmly in Spielberg territory, though hopefully while still retaining that intense detail Kubrick was renowned for. Also, Spielberg’s films can be hit or miss, but he tends to do a great job on TV shows he’s very involved with. A Napoleon with the scope that we saw in Band Of Brothers could be very interesting.
