Rumour: X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is getting an apocalyptic villain

Pro tip: Sometimes how you don’t say something, is just as revealing as actually saying something. Just check out JJ Abrams; he’s a master at not saying stuff. Unfortunately, it would appear that this is a skill that Bryan Singer still needs to learn. While chatting to Bleeding Cool about a number of his current projects, his lack of proficiency in the art of question dodging may just have resulted in him spilling the villainous beans for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

It began when BC was chatting to Singer about what brought him back to the franchise he had started, and asked him exactly what Days of Future Past was about.

“The movie is about destiny. What is your fate? What were you supposed to do, what should you have done when you were younger? What didn’t you do that would have made for a better future? And what if you could go back and change that.

I think I’ve got the time travel – I don’t really want to call it time travel, but for want of a better word, time travel figured out. I pitched it to James Cameron and he signed off on it.”

Now all that destiny and fate talk reminded the interviewer about comic book villain, Apocalypse aka En Sabbah Nur, a god-like 5000 year old mutant – according to X-Men lore, actually the very first mutant ever born – who was obsessed with the mission given to him by a race of space gods known as Celestials, of guiding/forcing mutants and humanity to embrace their respective destinies. For mutants this would mean becoming rulers of all they see, for humans this would mean becoming doormats. Them’s the apocalyptic brakes, I guess.

Now when the BC interviewer threw out Apocalypse’s name as speculation, instead of handling it like a pro, Singer apparently did a double take and responded with:

“I can’t tell you…”

What’s that Singer? I can’t hear you with your foot in your mouth. The interviewer then decided to press forward and ask if this was perhaps the all CG, performance captured character that Singer had been teasing weeks ago. Singer, not content with the current depth of his PR hole, then just continued digging by apparently beginning to look even more nervous than before and stating:

“This is how it gets started, when somebody starts piecing the little bits together…”

Now either Singer is one incredible poker player, or he just inadvertently confirmed Apocalypse’s involvement in this film. Now we know that Peter Dinklage is also supposed to be the villain, so it could be that Apocalypse is going to be the puppet master in the background, being held back for an Act 3 reveal, or it could be that FOX is going to tear a page out of Marvel’s book and Thanos him into the story as a sequel teaser.

Now Apocalypse was never involved in the original “Days of Future Past” story arc from which this film takes its name as well as main narrative, so if this does turn out to be more than just a misunderstanding, I’m not sure how he would fit into the story. As such, I’d prefer to see him rather just being setup for a future confrontation.

In the X-Men world, villains don’t get much bigger than Apocalypse so whichever approach they take, lets just hope that Singer and co do him justice. If they pull a “Galactus is an  Evil Space Cloud” a la Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, my geek rage will know no bounds.

No one can complain about more Apocalypse. Bar none the coolest character under Venom in the old M universe imo

Man, remember in the old X-Men cartoon, whenever Apocalypse showed up, it was to cause some major shit? Good times, good times.
