Get ready for EVIL DEAD 2!… I mean, EVIL DEAD 4!… No, wait. I mean ARMY OF DARKNESS 2!

If you’re not a fan of things that are either “evil” or “dead” or any combination of the two, then I have some bad news for your future. Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead, a remake of Sam Raimi’s classic horror, is about to tree rape your mind, while last week saw the announcement that Raimi and his brother would soon start work on a script for Evil Dead 4, a direct sequel to their original trilogy.

This may seem a little confusing, especially when you factor in Evil Dead 2. Oh, did I forget to mention Evil Dead 2? We’ll read on to find out more!

The first few reviews for Alvarez’s Evil Dead started coming in over the weekend after it premiered at SXSW, and thus far the verdict is that it’s a (very very) bloody good time at the cinema. Most importantly though, during the post-screening Q&A, Alvarez announced that he has already begun writing the sequel which will a be a totally original tale that doesn’t take any of its cues from Raimi’s work. Stars Jane Levy and SHiloh Fernandez have already signed on to the sequel, which promises some crazy stuff.

But does that mean that we’ll have two competing franchises now (produced by the same people, remember?) both called Evil Dead Something? Well no, says Rob Tapert, Raimi’s producing partner from Ghost House Films, as Raimi’s new film should technically not actually be called Evil Dead 4.

“That would be ‘Army of Darkness 2’. Everybody calls it ‘Evil Dead 4’ but ‘Army of Darkness’ [the last film in the trilogy] wasn’t called ‘Evil Dead’ anywhere except by the fans.”

And what about the return of one-chainsaw-handed, shotgun wielding hero Ash, played by Bruce Campbell? Would the new movie revolve around him again? Well, Tapert says that the fan favourite actor is ready to get groovy again.

“Sam threatens this every six months. I’ve heard this a thousand times, because in the back of his mind, he never wants to let go, because he loved making these movies. We all loved making them together. They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he’s not going to let that go, and I’m never going to say ‘no.’ It’ll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that’s what he does and who knows? It may happen.”

With Evil Dead apparently sounding like one of the best remakes to come out of Hollywood in ages, and a new proposed Army of Darkness, it’s a good time to be fan of ancient Sumerian demons. Also, you may need to see a priest about that.
