After five years, five seasons, it looks like it’s finally time to draw the curtain on one of the best spin-offs to appear from a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been a TV mainstay since 2008, filling in the gaps between Star Wars Episode II and III, as well as being a bridge to why things went so out of control between the two trilogies.

From the Clone Troopers finding a reason to distrust the Jedi, to Anakin being partnered up with his own apprentice through to the return of the one good thing from the Phantom Menace, Darth Maul, it’s been a quality experience so far, one that even trumps the films in certain respects. Let’s hope that the eventual successor to that iconic brand lives up the legacy that the Clone Wars leaves behind.

LucasFilm confirmed today that while a sixth season is unlikely, the episodes that have been in production will be completed, and available in some format. I’d be mighty dark sided if there was no additional material produced, especially after the heart-breaking fifth season finale. Here’s the full press release, via Coming Soon:

As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come.

As part of this shift, we have also made some key decisions affecting Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Detours.

After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series. While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we’re continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content. In the video below, Supervising Director Dave Filoni offers a peek of what is to come in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

At Star Wars Celebration VI last year, George Lucas gave fans a glimpse at the animated comedy series Star Wars Detours from Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, and Todd Grimes. Detours was conceived and produced before we decided to move forward with the new Star Wars trilogy, and in the wake of that decision, Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense. As a result, we’ve decided to postpone the release of Detours until a later date.

We are incredibly proud of the teams at Lucasfilm Animation for creating some of the most amazing animation ever produced for TV.

I has a sad now. Everything is not proceeding as I had foreseen. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the Clone Wars when you have a chance. Ignore the terrible film that preceded them, and enjoy a mix of episodes which tread between light side fun and dark side maturity. Here, I’ll even play you out with one of my favourite scenes from the show:

As for that new series that has been untouched by the might Disney Star of TV? I’m sure Kervyn could spin a few yarns about which era he’d like to see tackled. Just for the love of Midichlorians, don’t let it be a Lego Star Wars TV show.
