James Cameron is living in Pandora right now, writing AVATAR 2 and 3

It’s been a while since we’ve heard deep sea diving director James Cameron talk about his proposed Space Smurf Pocahontas aka Avatar sequels. Last we heard, Cameron was busy working how and when he would do for a fourth Avatar film, which would be a prequel of sorts.

Now that may be all good and well, but unless my grade 1 maths teacher was a drunkard and a liar, you have to go through 2 and 3 before you can get to 4. And that’s apparently exactly what Cameron is busy with now over in Pandora. Wait, what? He’s in Pandora?!

Speaking to Play Goes Strong, Cameron explained how he’s had to do some travelling in his head to get the story for the upcoming sequels.

“I’m working on ‘Avatar 2’ and ‘Avatar 3.’ I was talking the other day with Peter Jackson and said, ‘You had it easy dude. You had the books when you did the second and third ‘Lord of the Rings.’ I have to create my own books in my head and extract a script from it. I’m deep into it and I’m living in Pandora right now. There is that start up torque where you feel it’s coming to you. Then you build up momentum. That’s when it gets fun. The characters talk and it’s writing itself. I’m almost there right now. It’s building fast… As a writer, I need isolation. I’m calling you from New Zealand right now where I’m writing on a little farm. When you live in a special world like Pandora, you have to live in that world.”

Now when it comes to box office success, Cameron will have some really big shoes to fill with these sequels; shoes that he cobbled together himself when Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time by pulling in a ridiculous $2.78 billion worldwide. So is Cameron feeling the pressure to perform like that again?

“Pressure, no. It’s a little daunting because sequels are always tricky. You have to be surprising and stay ahead of audience anticipation. At the same time, you have to massage their feet with things that they know and love about the first film. I’ve walked that line in the past, so I’m not too worried about it. At the same time, I definitely have to deliver the goods.”

As to when to expect delivery of said goods though, well that’s apparently still all up in the air (or under the sea, if the rumours about the story direction for the sequels are to be believed). Avatar 2 was originally scheduled for December 2014, and with the newly streamlined post production processes that Cameron has previously mentioned, they can certainly still make that window. But apparently we shouldn’t be holding our breath about it, as that date will only be locked down once he hands in a completed script to Twentieth Century Fox.

I’m pretty intrigued by what Cameron can produce if he stops doing a Fern Gully impersonation, so lets hope he stops just living in Pandora and actually starts writing about it, or we’re going to have to either pay a visit to the morgue or – GASP! – actually watch The Smurfs 2 to get our blue people fix.

Yeah, the morgue sounds like the better option to me too.
