Ryan Reynolds has a need for speed in the latest TURBO trailer

I’m used to films stretching the whole “aspiring” lead character schtick, by now. Fievel wanted to be a sherriff in An American Tail film that quickly out-stayed its welcome. Buzz Lightyear wanted to be a real space ranger in the first Toy Story. Hogarth wanted to rule mankind with the massive fist of his Iron Giant robot and introduce communism into the US of A. I think.

But even for an animated film, Turbo is stretching that gimmick to breaking point. As there is no way, now way that a snail can be as fast as racing car. Can it?

From the makers of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, Turbo is a high-velocity 3D comedy about an underdog snail who kicks into overdrive when he miraculously attains the power of super-speed. But after making fast friends with a crew of streetwise, tricked-out es-car-goes, Turbo learns that no one succeeds on their own. So he puts his heart and shell on the line to help his pals achieve their dreams, before Turbo-charging his own impossible dream: winning the Indy 500.

Es-car-goes? Did Kervyn sneak in here and plant some puns to make me look worse than usual? Urgh. I’m not exactly biting my fingernails off for this movie, compared to other recent animated flicks such as Rise of the Guardians and the upcoming Epic and Despicable Me 2.

Still, at least it has some star audio power, with Ryan Reynolds voicing Snaily Gonzales, with assists from Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph,Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg, and Samuel L. Jackson.

That’s a heck of a lot of voices. Turbo kicks things into overdrive in July. Also, I’m totally predicting a scene from the movie, right now:

Turbo: I LOST MY TURBOEZ SPEED!

Romantic lead: THE POWER WAS INSIDE YOU ALL ALONG! THE SPEED DOES NOT MAKE YOU WHO YOU ARE!

Turbo: F$^% YOU! I CAN’T GO ON LIVING LIKE THIS! PASS ME THAT GUN!

Hey, I was 85% right when I predicted Olympus Has Fallen, wasn’t I?
