Allons-y! David Tennant to return for the 50th Anniversary of DOCTOR WHO

If you tuned into Doctor Who on Sunday night, you’re no doubt terrified of your Wi-Fi by now. Still, that wasn’t the biggest news to escape the TARDIS in this, the fiftieth year of the long-running BBC sci-fi epic. Big plans are in store for the upcoming special, plans so big, that it might require more than one Doctor to tackle whatever it is that Steven Moffat has in store for the Time Lord.David Tennant, Time Lord incarnation number ten will be returning to the show for said anniversary, alongside former companion Billie “Guess which part of my face is bigger” Piper. They’ll be joining current Doctor Matt Smith and his companion, Jenna Coleman for the special. And they won’t be alone either, as actor John “It really did in Alien” Hurt is also a lock to join them for the celebrations.

It’s been a while since Tennant last laced up some Converse All-Stars and threw on his signature coat. Taking over from season 2 after a falling out which saw ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston leave the show, Tennant owned the role for three more seasons, several specials and Christmas episodes before leaving on a high note in The End of Time Part Two back on New Years day in 2010. Tennant is also the only Doctor from the current series thus far to meet an incarnation from the classic series, in which he crossed paths with the fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson.

By the way, Tennant also happens to be married to Fifth Doctor’s real life daughter Georgia Moffet. Who played a genetic clone of the Doctor without a Y chromosome in a previous episode. Yes, this is all rather confusing. Here’s the press release that the BBC released to make this all officially-wobbly and such:

David Tennant and Billie Piper to return for blockbuster celebrations with John Hurt also confirmed

Ahead of tonight’s premiere, Doctor Who revealed some of the all-star cast that will mark the 50th anniversary. David Tennant and Billie Piper will join current Doctor and companion, Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman, while John Hurt (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Alien, Harry Potter) will also co-star.

Last seen as the Doctor on January 1, 2010, this will be the first time Tennant has reprised his role as the Tenth Doctor. During his reign as the Time Lord, Tennant appeared in three series as well as several specials. He was first revealed as the Doctor in the 2005 series finale, The Parting of the Ways.

Meanwhile Billie Piper, who played companion Rose Tyler for two series following the reboot in 2005, will appear in the show for the first time since featuring in Tennant’s last episode, The End of Time in 2010.

Also confirmed to join the cast is John Hurt who will also co-star in the anniversary special that will form part of blockbuster celebrations. Produced by BBC Cymru Wales for BBC One, the 50th anniversary will be written by Steven Moffat and Directed by Nick Hurran.
Filming for the 50th anniversary begins this week in the UK.

I’m glad to see Tennant back, and hopefully, a future Doctor will also get a chance to bring back my favourite Time Lord Incarnation Christopher Eccleston as well in another special.
