Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

You’ve got to love South Africa,if for no other reason than all our public holidays. While we’ve just had a whole swath of them, there isn’t another for a good while still. Luckily, before you get all Grumpy McSad-Face, Tony Stark is here to bring you some holiday cheer in this first full clip for Iron Man 3.

Darryn tries to collect all kinds of movie memorabilia, but Darryn is also really weird, so I can completely understand if you don’t want to follow his example. However you may want to hold onto that Walt Vorster desk nameplate your cousin’s girlfriend’s brother scored for you from the Egoli set, as you never know how much it will be worth in later years. Take a Star Trek prop gun that was used by star William Shatner on the show. It and a bunch of other pieces of movie memorabilia, including Christopher Reeve’s Superman IV costume Marilyn Monroe’s bra (go pervs!) from Some Like It Hot, went up auction over the weekend, with the “phaser” ending up being the top draw, eventually being purchased for a whopping $231 300!

Speaking of thing Star Trek, …Into Darkness director JJ Abrams may be a man of mystery, but that mystery will be relegated only to his films as Guardian has done a rather insightful and thorough profile on the man. It’s filled with all kinds of interesting trivia like how Abrams and Cloverfield director Matt Reeves got to work for Steven Spielberg while still in high school, and I highly recommend you give it a read.

Everybody’s been waiting with baited breath for local boy Neil Blomkamp’s follow-up to the smash hit District 9 but it’s all quiet on the Elysium front lately. Of course it would have been anything but quiet had Sony not decided to move the movie back from it’s original March release date to the tail end of the lucrative North American summer season. So now instead of watching Sharlto Copley be some kind of hobo-cyborg-ninja, while Matt Damon shoots people with effing big guns, all we have are these two new pics featuring Damon and co-stars Alice Braga, Wagner Moura and Random Tall Guy In A Head Brace.

Along with the pics, comes the news that we should be getting the first trailer for the film next week Tuesday.

And Jane Got a Gun’s musical chairs continues. After Jude Law did his own “AMANDLA!” thing and backed out of the western in solidarity with original director Lynne Ramsay (who famously just didn’t show up to work), Bradley Cooper has agreed to step into Law’s now vacated villainous shoes. For those of you keeping track at home, here’s where the cast and crew of this troubled production now stand: Gavin “Warrior” O’Connor now directs, Natalie Portman still plays a lady who has to protect her ex-outlaw husband after he gets shot full of holes and his old gang come to finish the job, Joel Edgerton plays the ex-lover she turns to for help, and Cooper will play Bishop, the leader of the outlaw gang.

I have to admit, for a rushed patch job, that is still one hell of a cast and crew.

We already knew that for his Avatar sequels, James Cameron would be making like Sebastian and heading “undah dah sea” but with James Cameron being James Cameron there will of course be a new technological twist on this. Avatar‘s motion-captured visuals already broke some new ground and they apparently want to break some new water, as longtime Cameron producer Jon Landau reveals that the director is looking at a means of doing the same level of highly detailed motion capture but underwater.

“We want to take advantage of the technologies brilliant people are putting out to make the next two movies even more emotionally engaging and visually tantalizing, and to really wrap up the story arc of our two main characters.”

“…because we can simulate [being underwater] visually but can’t simulate it experientially for [the actors]”.

Speaking of blue people, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer has given us the first proper look at a cast member for the eagerly anticipated sequel, by tweeting this pic of Beast as played by Nicholas Hoult. The pic was accompanied with the below quote.

“Many a monster wears the form of a man; it is better of the two to have the heart of a man & the form of a monster.”

Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. is getting a brand new title and will now be known as Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because obviously that just rolls off the tongue now. Fifty bucks says nobody ever calls it that outside of a press release or an official story. Along with this mouthful title, the show has also finally received an official synopsis that sheds more light on its direction.

Joss Whedon (MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) shows us not all heroes are super with MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fresh from his role in the summer’s box office smash, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven’t been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They’ll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes, aliens and the unusual – of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered S.H.I.E.L.D agents – that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world.

Executive Produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog), Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) comes Marvel’s first live-action TV series, MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

We’ve made no secret around these parts of our love for the greatest show in time and space, Doctor Who. The BBC sci-fi show will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and in that half century we’ve seen many different incarnations of the Doctor’s adventures, but there was one though that never saw the light of day. Until now. Veteran comic book artist Dan Norton has unveiled a stack of concept art and character sketches that he did for a failed Doctor Who animated show.

Along with the artwork he also explained why BBC eventually canned the idea and what the show would have been about.

“Yeah man, we were so close… Had a few revisions creatively that were requested and so we retooled. It was going to be epic man. End of the day, BBC didn’t want anything to distract from production of the tv show.

Well, what was close to happening didn’t. Since the BBC eventually passed on [it], you will be rewarded with [it]! This is the pitch poster I had only 7 hours to do. Starting to [sic] with first Doctor, the series would have touched on all the versions and filled in some gaps.”

All the versions?! Blimey, that would indeed have been epic!

While we’re still doing the will they/won’t they dance for Prometheus 2, original scribe Jon Spaihts has moved on, but he’s still keeping it outer-spacey. He has been tapped by Disney to pen a long in development (since 2009) remake of 1979 sci-fi flick The Black Hole. The original film – the most expensive movie Disney had made at that point – followed the crew aboard the spaceship, the USS Palomino, who “come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. Inside the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains that his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that the robots are the remnants of the former crew and that the scientist has no intention of letting them leave.”

Joseph Kosinksi (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) has already signed on to direct, so expect this black hole to be rather flashy.

Now I love my anime and have since I was quite young, which is why unlike most local fans, my first real exposure to anime was not Dragonball Z. By the time Goku and his friends graced SABC2, I had already watched and fell in love with way better stuff, which is why I found DBZ to be thoroughly craptastic. Looking like it was drawn by a drunk Michael J Fox, it consisted mainly of wild haired characters growling at at each other for 7 episodes straight as they look to be having the world’s longest bowel movement. And somehow, against all odds, the 2009 live-action version, Dragonball Evolution, was even worse.

But I’ve just stumbled on the perfect way they could have made that movie truly kick-ass: rip out all plot and just leave the fight sequences, and replace all the actors with stop-motion animated action figures. Don’t believe me? Then check out this amazing short film.

Bit confused, is there no follow on to District 9? Thought they were planning a sequal?

Nope. Well nothing official at least. Blomkamp has said that he has a story for it, but nothing has been officially announced. Personally, I don’t want a sequel. That movie is perfect just the way it is.
