Sometimes, rebooting a cult classic works out really well. Take 21 Jump Street for instance. Hip, well cast and veering off in a direction that didn’t clash with the original, the movie was a decent hit for Sony. That’s all thanks to the efforts of writer Michael Bacall, who is going to try and bottle that magic a second time with some strange phenomena.
You know the film that I’m talking about. It’s called Weird Science and made computers popular for all the wrong reasons in the 1980s.
John Hughes’ Weird Science was a hit when it arrived in 1985, and made stars out of Anthony Michael Hall, Bill Paxton and Kelly LeBrock’s physique. Universal Studios will be rebooting the movie, with Joel Silver also attached to produce. If you haven’t seen the original yet, it deals with two nerdy lads who use 1980s computer technology to scientifically create the perfect woman. Of course, things don’t go as planned, and the Kelly LeBrock simultron that emerges from their device teaches the lads how to be confident and swarthy with ladies in the real world.
While also avoiding being hit with a statutory rape sentence. Deadline says that the remake will be in the same mold as 21 Jump Street and The Hangover, being a modern update with an R-rated edge.
