It's all fish, hammers and love triangles in these new plot details and images for THOR: THE DARK WORLD

We’re just a couple hours away from the first thunderous trailer for Thor: The Dark World hammering into our brains, so you can expect quite a bit of thunder god action on the interwebs today.

And following up from yesterday’s Queen tribute poster (thunderbolts and lightning!), we have some new plot details, as well as a couple of new images that show a bit of the lighter, instead of lightning side of the superhero sequel.

The pics come courtesy of USA Today, who also spoke to star Chris Hemsworth about how Thor would live up to his promise to Earthly love interest Jane Foster that he would find a way back to her from Asgard. Something made all the more tricky since he actually did find a way back The Avengers and then promptly didn’t call her. Okay, so she was supposed to be in hiding for her own protection and he was kind of busy saving the world from alien invaders and his mischievous half brother, but you know how some girls can get.

“Thor still has lot of explaining to do, and a lot of making up. Even demigods end up in the doghouse, mate. So none of us [are] safe.”

According to Marvel Studios exec Kevin Feige “they finally reconnect”, but now the tables get turned from when they initially met as [SLIGHT SPOILER WARNING] Thor has to take Jane back to his native Asgard.

“So while Thor was a fish out of water on Earth in the first two films (Thor and The Avengers), this time Jane is very much a fish out of water in Asgard.”

And unfortunately for Jane there’s another very big, ass kicking fish named Lady Sif (Jaime Alexander) waiting for in Asgard to fight for the affections of Thor, and also the approval of his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins).

“It’s superhero action, but it’s the familiar territory of a love triangle where the parents think your girlfriend is wrong for you. That’s how the best of these movies work.”

But while she may not be a physical match for the demigoddess, the classy Portman clearly takes to the more medieval styled Asgardian costumery quite well as you can see above. But getting that look just right – for her as well as the world as a whole – and not just having it look like a “hokey” costume ball was not an easy task, which is why director Alan Taylor was brought on board. He made his name directing episodes of HBO’s mega successful sword and sandal fantasy epic, “Game of Thrones”, and his vision was apparently just what was needed for this sequel which veers a bit away from the superhero styled exploits and more into proper mythology, as Hemsworth explains.

“We were worried about coming across as hokey or whatever. If there is anyone who can pull off a fantastical world like Asgard with a great amount of integrity, it is Alan Taylor, as we’ve seen in Game of Thrones.”

Besides for just integrity, Asgard has enemies. Plenty of them. And the one to rear his head this time around is the Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), whose attacks requires Thor to up his game somewhat.

“I really wanted to ramp up his skill set in battle. He’s not just this Viking throwing the hammer. Here he’s more demigod with dynamic moves we haven’t seen before.”

Besides for “dynamic moves” (the electric slide, perhaps?), Thor will also have to resort to the unlikely tactic of tagging in his half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston). You know, the guy who has twice now already tried to ruin Thor’s day by conquering both Asgard and Earth. So yeah, awkward.

“Needing Loki’s help turns everything on its head. And it allows us to explore the underlying complexities of their relationship. It really ends up being a kind of chess match.”

And you just know that Loki, the eternal manipulator, will be playing his game while “helping out”, as Feige confirms.

“Tom has built and shaped one of the best movie villains in years with many, many layers. It will be very difficult for Loki to lose the villain status. He has that firmly in hand.”

What Thor: The Dark World will definitely have in hand is my ticket money on opening day, as everything I’ve seen and heard from the production has me really excited. They’re tackling one of my favourite comic book story arcs and they’ve brought in the right people to shepherd it in the right direction.

Damn, that trailer can’t come out quick enough.

Thor: The Dark World will storming into cinemas on November 8, 2013.
