Daniel Radcliffe is doing some TOKYO VICE

Every day I expect to hear some story about how the Harry Potter stars are busy flaming out in a downward spiral of substance abuse and hanging out with Corey Feldman, like most other child actors. And every day they disappoint me by making sensible, mature career decisions that help them to break away from their most recognizable role and to be taken more seriously by the film community.

That doesn’t mean that the ol’ Boy Who Lived, Daniel Radcliffe isn’t up for a little vice. Tokyo Vice, that is.

According to Deadline, Radcliffe will continue his string of intriguing movie choices, as he’s signed on to play the lead in an adaptation of Jake Adelstein’s 2009 nonfiction crime book, Tokyo Vice.

Here’s the official synopsis for the novel:

At nineteen, Jake Adelstein went to Japan in search of peace and tranquility. What he got was a life of crime… crime reporting, that is, at the prestigious Yomiuri Shinbun. For twelve years of eighty-hour work weeks, he covered the seedy side of Japan, where extortion, murder, human trafficking, and corruption are as familiar as ramen noodles and sake. But when his final scoop brought him face to face with Japan’s most infamous yakuza boss—and the threat of death for him and his family—Adelstein decided to step down… momentarily. Then, he fought back.

In “Tokyo Vice,” Adelstein tells the riveting, often humorous tale of his journey from an inexperienced cub reporter—who made rookie mistakes like getting into a martial-arts battle with a senior editor—to a daring, investigative journalist with a price on his head. With its vivid, visceral descriptions of crime in Japan and an exploration of the world of modern-day yakuza that even few Japanese ever see, “Tokyo Vice” is a fascination, and an education, from first to last.

The Asian crime saga will be directed by commercials director Anthony Mandler who will stepping up to the big leagues for his feature film debut, while acclaimed American playwright J.T. Rogers will be penning the screenplay to what sounds like it could be a rather interesting venture for the now grown-up Radcliffe.

He will be soon be seen in Beat generation murder mystery Kill Your Darlings, where he plays another real-life character, poet Allen Ginsberg, and then later in Alexandre “Haute Tension“Aja’s Horns, in which he plays a horny man. Literally.
