Another Earth director Mike Cahill finds his cast for I ORIGINS

I’ve been drinking and dispensing the Brit Marling kool-aid ever since I first saw and was subsequently blown away with the writer-actress’ work in low-fi sci-fi Sundance hit, Another Earth. But while Marling’s script and performance certainly was a huge component of what made that movie so good, you can’t deny the contribution of Mike Cahill’s touching direction. And his luscious hair.

Cahill hasn’t done anything behind the camera since then, but now he’s back with I Origins, another intriguing sci-fi film which he’ll be writing and directing this time. And oh look, he’s brought his old buddy Brit along, as well as some new TV friends he’s just made.

Deadline reports that Cahill’s I Origins, which contrary to popular belief is not another Steve Jobs biopic (otherwise it would have been iOrigins) has pulled quite the interesting young cast, being led by the aforementioned Marling. Joining her will be Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Pitt, Walking Dead‘s Steve Yuen, The Good Wife‘s Archie Panjabi and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Astrid Bergès-Frisbey (she was the girl with the fishy bottom. And by that I mean mermaid, you perverts).

As to what this motley crew will be getting up to, Cahill’s script follows “a molecular biologist (Pitt) who, together with his brilliant lab partner (Marling) uncovers startling evidence that may fundamentally change society as we know it.”

Pitt did had a simply electric turn as the young war vet turned wannabe crime kingpin Jimmy Darmody in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and it will be really interesting to see the dynamic between him and Marling, who has a habit of stealing scenes with her understated but magnetic performances. There’s no word yet on which roles the rest of the cast will play or what this “startling evidence” may be, but judging by this cast/crew’s past efforts, you can be damned sure I’ll be first in line to find out.
