Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

We open today’s proceedings with this little slice of awesome. Somebody has used LEGO and stop-motion animation to recreate the opening scene from James Bond film Casino Royale! Did I mention that its awesome?

It seems that Dredd‘s first verdict is being appealed, and with a bit of fan help, the sentence may just be “sequel” after all. At last that’s how Karl Urban, star of the fan-pleasing but box office underwhelming comic book adaptation sees it.

“Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with [Dredd screenwriter] Alex Garland this morning.  [A sequel’s] not off the agenda.  Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it.  It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen.  The power of fandom can resurrect projects.  In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek.  They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series.”

Somebody pass me a pen and paper, STAT!

I have no idea what’s actually happening in this behind the scenes set pic for Star Trek Into Darkness, but I’d like to imagine that director JJ Abrams is showing everybody embarrassing pics of Benedict Cumberbatch, much to their delight. Maybe pics of the English star wearing his “neutron cream”.

Damn you, Jeffrey Bell! I’ve only just heard of you and already you’re ruining my fanboy dreams? While I – like most of the comic fanboy portion of the internet – was busy frothing at the mouth at the possibility of superhero Luke Cage appearing in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers spinoff TV series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., executive producer Bell went and burst all our collective geeky bubbles by revealing that actor J. August Richards will in fact NOT be playing the hard-skinned superhero, despite what the trailers may hint at.

“It’s not the [character] people are talking about… Honestly, we were looking for this part, and we just said, ‘Look, all our parts are open to all diversity.’ So the fact that we have a black dude who is awesome and it’s J was just because he was the best actor. It wasn’t like, ‘You know who…!’”

Keeping things comic booky… We’ve written quite a bit on this site about what DC/Warner Bros, who keep drawing the ball when it comes to their non-Batman and Superman properties, needs to do to ape Marvel’s success. But nobody listens to us, so lets rather hear from (in)famous screenwriter Damon Lindelof.

“The Justice League problem? I think a lot of that depends on Man of Steel. The Justice League problem is not a problem of, who is the bad guy that Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, Superman, whoever you decide to pit them against. The problem is: What’s the tone of that movie? They’ve been struggling with launching their own tone. The tone of Green Lantern is very different from the tone of The Dark Knight. They clearly inhabit two entirely different worlds. You want to feel like someone is establishing a world where the Justice League can exist, maybe Man of Steel is that movie. If Man of Steel works, and it’s great, I think it starts to make sense where Paradise Island is in that world. Because that’s an entirely different world than the one Christopher Nolan introduced.”

Yeah, that’s what we said, Damon.

You know, as a hot young starlet starring in multiple big franchises, it’s easy to get confused. I mean, its clear from this new pic from YA adaptation Divergent, that star Shailene Woodley still thinks she’s MJ and Spider-Man is going to catch. Silly Shailene.

Hold onto your smartphones folks, because Sony is  making an Angry Birds 3D animated movie!… And that’s actually the full extent of what we know about that story. Sorry.

Steven Spielberg is loaded. I think we established that yesterday. But did you know that a not-insignificant portion of that money came from a bet he made with George Lucas 40 years ago?

“George came back from Star Wars a nervous wreck. He didn’t feel Star Wars came up to the vision he initially had. He felt he had just made this little kids’ movie. He came to Mobile, Alabama where I was shooting Close Encounters on this humongous set, and hung out with me for a couple of days.”

“He said, ‘Oh my God, your movie is going to be so much more successful than Star Wars. This is gonna be the biggest hit of all time’. He said, ‘You want to trade some points? I’ll give you two and a half per cent of Star Wars if you give me two and a half per cent of Close Encounters.’ I said, ‘Sure, I’ll gamble with that, great.’ Close Encounters made so much money and rescued Columbia from bankruptcy. It was the most money I ever made, but it was a meager success story. Star Wars was a phenomenon and I was the happy beneficiary of a couple of points from that movie which I am still seeing money on today.”

Those “couple of points”? Only about $46.6 million. Pocket change, clearly.

We’ve already seen a number of behind the scenes pics for The Wolverine but I just had to post this one that director James Mangold tweeted, to show you guys that even a guy as crazy ripped as Hugh Jackman has to suck in his gut from time to time.

@MangOld: “Hiro Sanada and HJ rehearse clash of claws and blades. Hiro is a truly great actor, martial artist and friend.”

He is pulling in his gut, right? Please tell me he’s pulling in his gut or my already fragile self-esteem just took a nose dive.

Looks like actor-director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr.’s Chef going to be turning the heat up in the kitchen, as a couple of hot tamale co-stars, in Scarlett Johannson and Sofia Vergara, have joined the comedy. Wait a minute… Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johannson? Hey, it’s Iron Man 2!

Okay, maybe minus the superheroics and with Gloria from Modern Family, and also, Happy Hogan is now a chef who loses his job and decides to open a food truck to rekindle his passion for cooking while also reconnecting with estranged friends and family. But other than that, it’s Iron Man 2!

From the very moment that it was announced that there would be a Star Wars: Episode VII, fans all started coming up with ideas of what the new film could actually be about. Heck, even I dabbled. But there’s a reason why us fans don’t get paid the big bucks, as can be seen by this clip from the Jimmy Kimmel show where “fans” gave director JJ Abrams some story ideas.

  1. Would fukken love another Dredd movie as the last one was very true to the 2000 AD comic books I used to read in the 80’s.

Hugh Jackman is very impressive at his age, he should do Captain America as well (see image)

    ;-p
