Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

On Monday, we brought you the full script of the pilot episode, written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men, Gravity), for JJ Abrams’ new show, Believe. However we know that some of you like reading about as much as swallowing a live porcupine, so we’re kicking out all those newfangled words, and instead giving you the first trailer to the new TV series.

Those scoopmongers over at Latino Review think they may have uncovered a big one. According to their sources, “The Tudors” star, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, is apparently in talks to star in Star Wars: Episode VII. It seems the full extent of LR’s backup for this story is the fact that Rhys-Meyers played a supporting role in director JJ Abrams’ Mission: Impossible 3, so I wouldn’t get too excited over this one yet.

Speaking of JJ Abrams… I love movie scores. I’m geeky that way. And one score I’m really looking forward to giving a listen to, it’s Michael Giacchino’s work on JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness. And now thanks to Michael Coleman from the Soundworks Collection, we can get a behind the scenes look at just how it was created.

Now that Park Chan-Wook’s English language debut has been turning all the heads, and it look’s Spike Lee’s remake of his Oldboy actually – shock gasp horror – won’t suck, it looks like the folks in Hollywood are turning their attentions to the rest of his Korean catalogue. Hollywood bigwig producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are apparently looking to create a English language remake of the director’s film, the first of the unofficial Vengeance trilogy, which sees a man sinking to some all time violent lows to earn enough money for his sister’s kidney transplant. Broken City writer Brian Tucker will be providing the English language screenplay while no directors are attached yet.

Seems that David Fincher won’t be going 20, 000 Leagues Under The Sea after all. There isn’t much sea on a shelf. Fincher’s big budget adaptation of the classic Jules Verne tale was all good to go with a huge grant from the Australian government, where they were set to shoot, and Brad Pitt in the lead.  But now Pitt has apparently left the production, prompting Disney to apparently shelve it, with Aussie press saying that production will only resume again in late 2014, if at all.

And The Hobbit is back to Hobbiting again! Director Peter Jackson took to his Facebook page to post a new pic and announce that production on The Hobbit Trilogy has resumed, as they start to shoot the remainder of the third film, subtitled There and Back Again.

“Back on set for our last Hobbit pick ups. Our last ever Tolkien pick ups, in fact. It’s going to be an intense few weeks, but we’re looking forward to shooting some powerful scenes with our great cast. Our next blog is coming soon!”

Gandalf is apparently not all that pleased.

Chinese actress Li Bingbing seems to love humanoid robot things that make other humanoid robot things explode. Fresh from a cameo in Iron Man 3 (Oh you don’t live in China? Then I guess you didn’t see that version), she’s now joined Michael Bay’s Transformers 4. Joining her will also be Chinese amateur actors who won their casting call through a local reality TV show. If you don’t find yourself in China though, but rather over in Obamaland, you can also join the production as an extra as a casting call has gone out for “adults 18+ and children 9-12 of any ethnicity to work June 3-20 in the Austin area.”

I don’t know what kind of catering they have over on the set of Ender’s Game, but I’d hazard a guess that Harrison Ford’s food consists of nothing but lemons. Every time I’ve seen a picture or a snippet of video of him to do with the movie, he always looks like somebody just kicked his dog, and this new promo poster is no different. But at least Ender’s wearing a cool helmet, that will not result in him being shot in the mouth, right?

Like a wise and wrinkled old man with a flamethrower once said: “Merchandising!” and it seems that Warner Bros’ may just be following Yoghurt’s advice as they’ve apparently about to launch a new line of redesigned Justice Line toys. What’s interesting is that this new line has exactly the same team lineup that’s oft been rumoured as being used in the proposed movie. Could WB be laying the groundwork for the movie with action figures?

It’s a widely knows fact that the later Mortal Kombat movies were celluloid turds, but that first movie? That’s cheesy goodness, right? Man, I remember walking out of that cinema with a massive grin on my face and that killer theme song still blaring in my head, wanting to kung fu everybody! I was also a stupid kid at the time.

The folks at CinemaSins are not stupid kids anymore and they’ve decided to revisit the movie with their adult, brains, and suddenly that movie is not quite so cool anymore.

It’s been a while since we’ve featured a short film on here, and today we got a good one. This heartbreaking sci-fi short from writer Dag Shapshak and director Joe Sill makes use of some sharp visuals to paint a pretty stark and emotional film.

Female astro-miner Shona has been mining under dangerous conditions on the moon for the past two years in order to pay for expensive medical treatments in hopes of save her bed-ridden daughter Darla, and now that her tour is completed, a younger astronaut Paige has come to replace her. Shona is reluctant to return to the world she once knew, but in meeting Paige realizes that returning to Earth isn’t where she’ll find peace – she will have to return home.
