Kevin Feige provides an update on Marvel's Phase 3 – talks Doctor Strange, Hulk, Runaways and Inhumans

I think it’s safe to say that Marvel Studios isn’t going anywhere. There may been a bit of a brouhaha lately today with their Avengers cast’s paychecks, but Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the rest of the get-along gang are not the only cinematic heroes that Marvel has in their stable.

And come Phase 3, Marvel’s post The Avengers 2 game plan, we’re probably going to see a whole lot of them. Exactly who “them” are, is not 100% clear yet, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is willing to spill the beans on where a couple of them are standing now.

The most recent news for Marvel’s larger catalogue of celluloid characters was of course that they were now once again in possession of the rights to The Punisher, Ghost Rider and Blade. So would we be seeing any of these characters popping up in Phase 3? Not really, as Feige explained to EW.

“So Punisher, Ghost Rider, … Blade, all those characters are back. They all have potential, but I think we need to find the right time.”

That “right time” bit may the crux of the problem here, as Marvel have numerous properties already in various stages of development, and Feige gave a rundown on where some of them are at the moment.

On Doctor Strange, which has already been confirmed will be a part of the Phase 3 lineup, and which already has some casting rumours flying around:

“I would love Strange to be a part of that only because he’s a great character. He’s a great standalone character. He’s got a great origin story, for the most part. And that world of pure magic, we haven’t done yet. There’s a whole supernatural/magic alternate dimension going on in the Marvel comics that we haven’t ever touched on. So I think that’s exciting.”

On a third Hulk film, which has been in talks for a while now, but without any concrete development:

“What we’re excited about exploring and expanding is Mark [Ruffalo] — and Banner’s not in Planet Hulk at all. The fun of the Hulk is his interaction with humans. Mark could stand in his own movie. … We’re talking about it. We’re excited to sit down and go, ‘What is a stand-alone Hulk movie?’”

On The Runaways, the script of which was penned by Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce back in 2010 already, but hasn’t gone further than that:

“It’s a matter of where it fits. Runaways sort of falls in between those [big blockbusters and smaller surprise films] in a way. We just haven’t found where or how to do it… right now. I’d love to do it someday.”

On Inhumans, which has been thrown about as a possible future franchise for a while now already:

“Inhumans is cool, they’re really great characters… All the craziness that comes with Inhumans, we’ve done in the other movies already. But this would have some of the social drama that we haven’t really done yet. [Fox’s] X-Men, obviously, has been touching on that stuff for a while.”

Out of all of them, I would love to see Inhumans the most, but ironically this is probably the property standing the lowest chance of actually making it to the screen. It would need a massive cast, has a crazy, complicated backstory and would need to have a lead that never once says a single word during the entire film. Yeah, that’s not exactly screaming out to be made into a mainstream movie.
