A muppet of a man may be leading us back to Wonderland

I’m not the biggest Tim Burton fan around here, that honour belongs to Lourens, but even he would have to admit that there was something just a bit off about Burton’s adaptation of classic children’s tale Alice in Wonderland. Maybe it was Helena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen, with her head like Nicki Minaj’s backside, or maybe Johnny Depp’s Hatter, that looked like Madonna who had been electrocuted while wearing a clown costume. Either way, the movie dragged.

Not at the Box Office though, where it made enough money to warrant a sequel. But (luckily?) Burton isn’t returning, and instead it’s up to another man who knows a thing or two about bringing classic children’s characters to a modern audience: James Bobin.

HBO

Bobin is of course the director behind the hilariously entertaining, 2011 musical comedy, The Muppets, which was a huge critical and box office success and ended up winning the Best Original Song at that year’s Oscars, and introduced a whole new generation of viewers to Jim Henson’s charming puppet characters.

Bobin is currently busy shooting that film’s sequel, The Muppets… Again!, for Disney and it seems like the House of Mouse is liking what he’s doing enough to also offer him the reins on the Wonderland sequel as well. Variety are reporting the Bobin has “entered early talks” to direct the next Wonderland film, which currently has the working title of Into The Looking Glass. If he signs on, it’s assumed that this will be his next project after the Muppets sequel wraps early next year.

The sequel’s screenplay will be penned by veteran Disney writer Linda Woolverton, who besides for penning the original Burton film, has also written a whole heap of Disney movies: The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, as well as the upcoming live-action, villain-centric Sleeping Beauty adaptation, Maleficent.

It’s uncertain yet which narrative direction her new script will take, as the earlier film already spun together plot threads from Lewis Carroll’s original two fantasy novels, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Bobin’s selection as director is certainly an intriguing one as he definitely is nowhere near as gothic and macabre as Burton, so it will be interesting to see if he moulds himself to the existing vision of Wonderland, or whether he does something markedly different. Whatever happens though, I just hope he finds a way to incorporate some more musical contributions from Flight of the Conchords.

“Am I maaaaaaaaaad, or am I a Hatter? Am I a hatter?!”

  1. Tim Burton got confused between the original Alice in Wonderland and American Mcgee’s Alice 😀
