Benicio Del Toro lands lead role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

And the Guardians of the Galaxy casting news just keeps on coming in, and more importantly, keeps on surprising. For a movie that features a talking tree and a smoking raccoon who could make a hooker blush with his colourful language, Marvel sure have rounded up a stellar cast for the movie. After this weekend’s news that Doctor Who alum Karen Gillan has joined the film as the female villain lead, now comes word that Benicio Del Toro has joined the sci-fi superhero flick in a major role…

…And we have no idea what that role is! Ha! Gotcha!

Seriously though, we have no idea what role Del Toro is playing, as Deadline reports that Marvel is keeping this one completely under wraps. What is known though is that not only will this be a major role in Guardians, but also a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe overall. Del Toro has apparently signed a multi-picture deal with the comic book film studio, that will see him popping up in an undisclosed number of future Marvel movies as well as Guardians.

With John C. Reilly already cast as Rhomann Dey, the Samuel L. Jackson equivalent for the Guardians, and Glenn Close as the head of the Nova Corps, the space law enforcement agency that features in the movie, that doesn’t leave many other options for this type of background character. So who could he possibly be?

Already there have been grumblings of “Thanos” all over the internet, grumblings I wholeheartedly endorse, but at this point it’s all just conjecture. What isn’t conjecture is that Marvel really seem to be going the whole nine yards on this film, despite the lesser known status of its source material. With James Gunn at the helm and Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace and Michael Rooker rounding out the cast, this is really shaping up to be the Marvel movie to keep an eye on. Especially since it  features a talking tree and a smoking raccoon who could make a hooker blush with his colourful language.
