Is Warner Bros making a live action "zombie" ARCHIE feature film?

Oh look, it’s only 11:30 and we’re already seemingly into the WTF? portion of our scheduled programming.
Classic comic Archie – you know, the one with the far fetched tale of two hot girls fighting over a ginger – has never had a full length feature film, and that’s something that Warner Bros is apparently going to correct. Only, if some reports are to believed, this will not be the Archie story you know. Unless you know an Archie story with zombies.

Deadline are reporting that Pitch Perfect helmer Jason Moore has signed to direct the live action adventure of Riverdale’s most famous citizen, but where it gets interesting is that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has been tapped to provide the screenplay.

As a writer, Aguirre-Sacasa has dabbled in all formats of entertainment: plays (Based On A Totally True Story), TV series (Glee), film (the upcoming Carrie remake) and most importantly comics. I say important, because he actually wrote an Archie comic earlier this year, but one that was not set in the normal canon. This series, titled “Afterlife with Archie” saw Riverdale invaded by current pop culture buzzword rulers, zombies.

Now while Deadline’s report does not say that Aguirre-Sacasa is specifically using his own zombified story for this screenplay, it does say that this is one of the many directions the story is possibly heading in, mashing up the classic old school Americana feel of the Archie comics, with the gore and horror of a zombie film.

Now I grew up on Archie comics, and I would love to see a Zombie Archie film (can you imagine the hunger on zombie Jughead?), but not as live action. An animated take on Archie, Betty, Veronica and the gang facing off against the undead, Paranorman style, actually sounds like a lot of fun.

Since Deadline’s original story though, Variety have come out with a report of their own which contradicts the original, saying that the movie will be a coming of age comedy in which “Archie faces a ‘teenage midlife crisis’ and must find his purpose in life before graduation.”

So milkshakes, hamburgers and awkward love triangles with not a single zombie in sight? Definitely sounds the Archie I knew growing up. And with Moore at the helm, it could be surprisingly charming and fun, much like Pitch Perfect was. Only problem is, I kind of now want to see Reggie have what little brains he has left eaten by the walking dead.
