Another weekend, and more money for those Hollywood execs to count. Specifically, Universal Pictures, who were smiling all the way to the bank as their madness with musclecars movie Fast & Furious 6 climbed to $580 million globally, the fastest any of the studio’s releases have ever done that. But that still wasn’t enough for Vin and the boys to hold onto this weekend’s top spot though as they were kicked off their racing striped throne by Ethan Hawke led low budget thriller, The Purge, which – yep, you guessed it – was also released by Universal.

The Blumhouse Productions’ high concept home invasion thriller was made on the cheap – costing just $3 million – much like producer Jason Blum’s other hits (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) and just like those, went on to make a pretty significant return on investment.

The Purge pulled in $36.4 million in its opening weekend in the US to put it in pole position this weekend past, while Fast & Furious 6 dropped to second place with a  $19.8 million take on its third week, just barely managing to beat out the third place Now You See Me. The other new entry this past weekend, The Internship, which was banking on audiences wanting to see the Wedding Crashers pairing of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn together again, opened lower than expected and had to settle for fourth place.

Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend.

  • The Purge – $36.4 Million
  • Fast and Furious 6 – $19.8 Million
  • Now you see me – $19.5 Million
  • The Internship – $18.1 Million
  • Epic – $12.1 Million
  • Star Trek Into Darkness – $11.7 Million
  • After Earth – $11.2 Million
  • The Hangover III – $7.4 Million
  • Iron Man 3 – $5.8 Million
  • The Great Gatsby – $4.2 Million

  1. The Purge!?! That guy knows how to pull in audiences even they have borrowed somewhat from You’re Next which I personally cannot wait to see along with the Evil Dead remake.
