TRAILERCEPTION! BWAAAAAARRRHHHHP! That was my obligatory trailer fog horn, by the way, a sound that seems to be included in every single trailer released today. Before then though, the one thing just about trailer possessed was the phrase “In a world…”, the signature of legendary trailer voice-over artist Don LaFontaine (RIP). But can you imagine what that phrase would have sounded like if done by a woman’s voice instead of the raspy bass rumble of LaFontaine?
Well, Lake Bell thought about it. Then realized it could be quite a funny story so she she wrote, directed and starred in a movie about it, and now the trailer for that movie is here!
Carol Solomon is a struggling vocal coach. Propelled by the hubris of her father, Sam Sotto, the reigning king of movie-trailer voice-over artists, Carol musters the courage to pursue her secret aspiration to be a voice-over star. Her fiery sister, Dani, becomes a trusted confidante, and Carol engages the skills of a charming sound techie named Louis. Armed with renewed confidence, Carol lands her first voice-over gig—a primo spot—nabbing the job from industry bad boy Gustav Warner. And then the real trouble begins. Carol becomes entangled in a web of dysfunction, sexism, unmitigated ego, and pride.
I doubt that In a World… would appeal to the Adam Sandler crowd, but the general consensus from the entire festival circuit is that it’s smart, mature, charming and funny (it ended up winning the award for Best Screenplay at this year’s Sundance Festival), with a star-making performance from Bell both in front of and behind the camera.
In A World… doesn’t have a release date yet.
