While Shailene Woodley may have seen her role of Mary Jane Watson puff-puff-passed out of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and into the third movie yesterday, that doesn’t mean that the young up and coming actress doesn’t still have a whole lot of other movies on her plate.
One such film, the coming of age drama The Spectacular Now, was the toast of the festival circuit earlier in the year, eventually winning big at Sundance. Now the first theatrical trailer has been released so that those of us not lucky enough to visit international film festivals can see what the fuss is about.
Sutter Keely (Miles Teller) lives in the now. It’s a good place for him. A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he’s the life of the party, loves his job at a men’s clothing store, and has no plans for the future. A budding alcoholic, he’s never far from his supersized, whisky-fortified 7UP cup. But after being dumped by his girlfriend, Sutter gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky (Shailene Woodley) hovering over him. Not a member of the cool crowd, she’s different: the “nice girl” who reads science fiction and doesn’t have a boyfriend. She does have dreams, while Sutter lives in a world of impressive self-delusion. And yet they’re drawn to each other.
Forgetting the fact that Woodley and co-star Miles Teller are both really talented young thespians, or that at director James Ponsoldt’s previous indie feature, Smashed, was quite the movie, this trailer already had me sold at “from the writers of 500 Days of Summer”. That romantic drama (coincidentally directed by The Amazing Spider-Man helmer Marc Webb) was a slice of bitter-sweet heaven, and if Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter’s script has anywhere the same level of charm, this will definitely be worth the watch.
The Spectacular Now will be getting a limited release on July 2, 2013.

Damnit, these trailers always try and tell you how it all goes down. Luckily 500 Days taught me that it’s not about the story but the journey. This should make for a nice date film.
