Robert Downey Jr signs a new deal for AVENGERS 2 and 3

You’ve got to envy Robert Downey Jr. Out of all the actors who have appeared in their own movies based on characters in capes and tights, he’s become the true face of the Avengers franchise with his portrayal of Tony “Iron Man” Stark.

But after a trilogy of Iron Man films and an Avengers appearance that left him huffing a brown paper bag like a hobo with a bottle of superglue. Downey Jr’s contract was basically finished, with Iron Man 3 being a perfect send-off for the character. But it looks like the fan favourite will be back for more Avengering at least, in the near future.

Marvel broke the news when they announced that Downey Jr had signed a two picture deal to return for The Avengers 2 and 3. Downey Jr however, won’t headline a fourth Iron Man film, which was not included in the deal. As for how substantial his role could be, who knows? Samuel L Jackson signed a multi-picture deal to appear as SHIELD head honcho Nick Fury, in a number of films that were basically cameos, abrring Iron Man 2 that is.

Downey Jr could follow the same path, but then again, he’s earned it. While Iron Man 4 will no doubt be made, it won’t be any time soon. Iron Man 3 was the first of the Phase Two films that will lead up to Avengers 2, but there are no plans for an Iron Man to come flying into the third phase of Marvel films.

Anyway, here’s the full press release from the house of M;

“I am Iron Man.”

Tony Stark’s famous closing line to the very first Iron Man film takes on new life today as Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of the “billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.”

Under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.” Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson.

Downey, Jr.’s last two Marvel films, 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers” and this year’s “Iron Man 3,” rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date.

“Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is being written and directed by Joss Whedon. Featuring favorites from the first Avengers film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen, “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is slated to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.

So who would you like to see headline a future Iron Man film? Personally, I’d have no problem with Don Cheadle donning the Iron Patriot armour for such a role.

    that’s fantastic news! even if it’s cameos (which I doubt) or w/e. So many possibilities… they could have Rhodey don the war machine armour for some or other reason in avengers 2 which could then lead to his own spin off film, giving RDJ a break, perhaps bringing him, or them both, back for avengers 3

    Robert Downey Jr IS IRONMAN! I do not think anyone else could pull off the role after what he did with it. Little cameos would work for me in some of the other films if he doesn’t want to be in a full feature role himself. But he cannot be replaced!
