Will Smith is just too damn expensive for INDEPENDENCE DAY 2

I thinks it’s safe to say that Independence Day is the movie that really cemented Will Smith as more than just another TV actor moving up through the ranks. Without him, the movie would have lacked a touch of charisma and fun, that no amount of morale-raising presidential speeches could have replaced.

An Independence Day sequel is looming on the horizon like a mothership with a primed cannon, but it looks like this time, the planet will need someone other hero for hire than Captain Steven Hiller to save the day. Because his price tag is just too much to afford.

“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive,”director Roland Emmerich told the NY Daily News via Coming Soon during a media blitz for his film, White House Down.

He’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film, and the other half are people who are new.

I don’t doubt that statement for a second. Since Independence Day in 1996, Smith has become an actor who can easily earn a $20 million price tag per movie. Still, there should be plenty of other faces that’ll return for the sequel, hopefully actors such as Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Judd “Nobody’s perfect” Hirsch.

And if Emmerich has a script in place that calls for a young man/lady/wonder twin hair back and forth duo to help save the day, then I’m certain that the Smiths are but a phone call away. Welcome to Smirth! Punch!

  1. Maybe they can get his son for half price.

Or better yet get willow smith, 10min of “I whip my hair” and the aliens will bugger off at warp 9.

ID4 without Will Smith is like Ghostbusters without Bill Murray. I’d also be unhappy if Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum don’t appear.

Has anyone tried watching this movie recently? I tried to, but the cheese and ham that started flowing from my ears and eyes proved fatal.

Just rope in the Rock for a quarter of the price, and you have a summer action flick.

We’re now in the land of unnecessary sequels. 🙁
