Jim Carrey isn't happy with the level of violence in KICK-ASS 2

Not every superhero movie this year features a character with actual powers. And in the case of Kick-Ass 2, any actual skills to go with the spandex as well. The film is out soon, and as per Hollywood guidelines, it’s time to start the usual press junket tour to promote the movie.

Except for Jim Carrey that is, as he’s none too pleased with the recent violence in the US of A, something that he feels that he can’t endorse for the sequel.

Speaking his mind on Twitter, Carrey had the following to say:

I meant to say my apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.

And in a way, I understand what Carrey is saying, and at least he isn’t telling people to not go watch the movie, or avoid getting immunization shots for children like his lunatic wife does. But the thing is, if you’ve read the Kick Ass comic book sequel, then you’ll know that violence comes at a cost in that series. There is a very visible line of cause and effect that is visible. And that’s something that it’s writer, Mark Millar, feels is important.

Responding on the Millarworld forums, Millar wrote:

Kick-Ass avoids the usual bloodless body-count of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence, whether it’s the ramifications for friends and family or, as we saw in the first movie, Kick-Ass spending six months in hospital after his first street altercation….Ultimately, this is his (Carrey’s) decision, but I’ve never quite bought the notion that violence in fiction leads to violence in real-life any more than Harry Potter casting a spell creates more Boy Wizards in real-life.

Jim, I love ya and I hope you reconsider for all the above points. You’re amazing in this insanely fun picture and I’m very proud of what Jeff, Matthew and all the team have done here.

I’m still looking forward to Carrey’s involvement in the film as the born again former mobster Colonel Stars and Stripes. Because I also know that that character, is involved in some brutal scenes that I won’t spoil before the film releases. And quite frankly, I’d be more concerned with the second wave of nutballs that are going to be inspired to don spandex and go out patrolling in real life, much like the first film did when it was released back in 2010.

Kick-Ass 2, will not be thinking of the children when it dons a costume in August this year.
