Hi folks! We’ve been getting a bit dark with our horror films of late, so it’s time to turn up the fun with today’s Fright Club film, Fright Night, a remake of the Tom Holland 1985 classic of the same name.
For those of you not familiar with either, Fright Night tells the tale of teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin), who starts suspecting his new next-door neighbour (Colin Farell) is a vampire after kids in the neighbourhood start disappearing, including his vampire-obsessed former best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). The film also stars the lovely Imogen Poots as Charley’s girlfriend, Amy.
Now, while Imogen Poots might be enough to convince most of you to watch Fright Night, we are here for the horror after all and it definitely delivers. While it might not be the most terrifying film of the year, Fright Night seems to revel in the amount of fun it is having. Colin Farrell, as Jerry, starts off the film by doing his best Twilight impression, definitely for effect, before turning the audience’s expectations upside down by cranking up the evil to eleven and when he does…no amount of popcorn in the world can prepare you for what will happen next.
Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) managed to craft one of my surprise favourite films for 2011, as Fright Night becomes a wild roller-coaster ride with enough blood and monster-makeup to satisfy the most intrepid of horror fan without resorting to being cliche, as it is quite clear that the cast had a fantastic time making this film. Have I mentioned that the film also stars tenth Doctor himself, David Tennant, nigh unrecognizable when he first appears on screen before you realise he’s just doing his best Criss Angel impression.
What I love the most about Fright Night is, as I’ve mentioned before, it sets less of a darker tone than most other horror films while successfully managing to be suspenseful and gory nightmare fuel, so it is perfect for a weekend movie night. While not everyone’s cup of tea, it should definitely be on your must-watch horror list, especially since it directly poked fun at Twilight fans before turning vampires back into what they should be…horrific.

One of the best of the otherwise lacklustre remakes.
Loads of fun. I watched the original and I have to say, it’s still the better film
(it’s miles better written and the themes have more space to breath) but the remake is still very good

Yeah, I’m a huge fan of the remake. Farrell just steals every single second of every scene he’s in.
