Anyway, enough of you will have seen Man of Steel by now to be able to comment on the film’s flaunting of comic book canon in a few crucial areas – particularly Superman’s handling of one particular foe! Consider also how Iron Man 3 treated that franchise’s most iconic villain, the Mandarin, a few months back.

We’re using superheroes as examples but this could apply to any film adaptation of a literary, TV or video game series which draws on a substantial amount of world lore. How do you feel about liberties being made to the source material? Do you respond on a case by case basis to changes? What alterations have you agreed with and what have you hated? Mouth off now.

I don’t mind if details change between the different mediums, as long as the basic premise of a character is recognizable I’m fine. I’m more interested in enjoying the story that’s being told now, than worrying some detail has been changed & therefore the whole story is RUINED!!!!!! Superman’s red undies is a case in point.

Think people who expect a strict panel by panel or page by page reproduction of a comic or book are being a little unrealistic because some things work better in print than on screen, and you can do something on screen that may not have been possible in the source material – that’s not even taking into account time constraints.

Different isn’t bad, it’s just different – and change is inevitable. As long as the end product is enjoyable I’m okay with it.

For me it depends on the source material. With the examples you have given, the comics have been going on for so long. I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the amount of times Ironman has gone up against the Mandarin. How much has Superman changed from 20 years ago to current? For me, with those comics, i feel you need to just stay true to the feel of the comic, but can tell a whole new story. I was perfectly happy with the way they handled the Mandarin, because the way they did felt perfectly in tune with the real villain of the movie and tone of Iron Man.

When it comes to telling the whole story of a comic however, I fell you should be accurate. I was quite unhappy with the way they handled certain parts of Kickass. The Walking Dead drove me insane because of how much it deviated. I was 100% happy with The Watchmen though for the service it did in staying true to the comic.
