Lovelace

If there’s any industry that is really weird behind the scenes, it’s got to be pornography. What goes on behind closed doors and sets, in order to make those spank bank movies which will then be pirated across the internet is something that I don’t want to know anything about.

But it never used to be that way. Sure, porno films are seen as sordid, abusive and gender-trashing pieces o video today, but back in the seventies? That stuff was considered to be artistic. And at the top of the industry was Linda “Deepthroat” Lovelace. This is her SFW story trailer.

In 1972—before the internet, before the porn explosion—Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, Linda discovered freedom and the high-life when she fell for and married charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor.

As Linda Lovelace she became an international sensation—less centerfold fantasy than a charming girl-next-door with an impressive capacity for fellatio. Fully inhabiting her new identity, Linda became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom and uninhibited hedonism. Six years later she presented another, utterly contradictory, narrative to the world—and herself as the survivor of a far darker story.

Ironically, while the reviews are praising the performances of  Amanda Seyfried as the title character, they’re also complaining that for a movie that is based in the beginnings of the pornography industry, it’s a little too PG. Still, while SFW may be a bit of a disappointment for this kind of movie, the quality looks solid and word on the beat from the NY Post hints that Seyfried could be looking at an Oscar nomination for her performance.

Lovelace also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Hank Azaria, Adam Brody, Bobby Cannavale, James Franco, Debi Mazar, Chris Noth, Chloe Sevigny, Sharon Stone, and Juno Temple. Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman direct. Lovelace will be going deep in August.
