Ryan Reynolds talks DEADPOOL movie; says it's the worst relationship he's ever had

When it comes to playing comic book characters, Ryan Reynolds treats his career like Pokemon: He’s gotta act ’em all. He’s played Green Lantern, will soon be soon be seen in the live action adaptation of R.I.P.D, and for years was attached to the role of The Flash. But the one superhero movie he’s really struggled to bring to the screen, was actually for the very first superhero character he ever played: Deadpool.

Since playing an iteration of the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds has been trying for years to get The Merc with the Mouth’s solo movie off the ground to no avail. But that’s not to say that those plans are scrapped. Or not.

Speaking to Total Film, Reynolds updated on the film’s mercurial development status.

“That movie is alive and kicking, and then it’s dead as a doornail. Then it’s alive and kicking and then it’s dead… it’s like the worst relationship I’ve ever had!”

And while the film itself might be playing hard to get with Reynolds, it certainly sounds like the approach that attached director Tim Miller and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wants to take completely nails what the fourth-wall breaking antihero is all about.

“The character knows he’s a comic-book character, he knows he’s in a film, he knows who the executives are at the studio making the movie. In the current iteration of the script, Deadpool is aware of the Wolverine movie. He doesn’t say anything disparaging about it but he does at one point play with the Deadpool action figure with some curiosity.”

That really does sound amazing, and it’s a pity that the film has been stuck in this developmental limbo. Maybe now that the Deadpool videogame has dropped (Darry’s review is over here), it will generate enough fan buzz for the folks at Fox to finally get their act together. I need me some chimichangas on screen.

  1. I would have thought that if they were to make a Deadpool movie, they would have gone and made a reboot…considering how Deadpool ended up in Wolverine. No one wants to see that version of Deadpool again.

As far as I know, Ryan Reynolds wants to do this movie to make up for the crappy version in X-Men Origins: Wolverine
