It’s beginning to look a lot like Doctor Who regeneration cycle time near the festive season. Okay, that may not be as catchy as I intended it to be, but it is kinda of true. It’s been a couple of years since David Tennant bid us farewell before Matt Smith took over, and that actor will also be handing the torch over to a new Doctor at the end of this year’s Christmas special.

Who will be the next Doctor? Will he become she? Will said Doctor finally have ginger hair? No one knows, but one thing is for certain. It won’t be Michael Jackson. And you have no idea how close the King of Pop came to being the King of Time.

According to the book, Now On The Big Screen: The Unofficial and Unauthorized Guide to Doctor Who At The Cinema via THR, Jackson was near the top of the list to take on the role of the Time Lord for a big screen adaptation of the character back in 1988. Would jackson have accepted though? Quite possibly yes, seeing as how he was described as being “quite keen” on doing the film, shortly after having completed work on Moonwalker hee he.

The film was in development over at Star Trek homebase Paramount Studios, back in the heyday of that franchise, and would have seen a new take on the Doctor and his adventures throughout time and space. And if Jackson wasn’t available, Paramount would have gone with their second choice: Bill Cosby. “Well Daleks, I’m going to surrender to yoooou, but first I gots to explain timey wimey being wibbly wobbly pudding!”

Fortunately for all of us, these plans fell through, as Doctor Who went off the air, briefly resurfaced in 1996 with Paul McGann as a newly regenerated Doctor before making a full comeback in 2005.

I’m guessing that the Hollywood drug trade was really booming in 1988.
