On paper, Mary Poppins was your typical Disney movie. Light-hearted, great for kids and adults and filled with Dick van Dyke butchering a British accent without remorse, it’s the kind of movie that everyone has to see at least once in their lifetime.

It’s also the kind of movie that almost never got made. Hollywood has a way with mangling book adaptations for the big screen, with only a fortunate few making it through the process relatively unscathed. And that was a fear that author P.L Travers had for her book.

Travers wanted to prevent having to go through that aggravating process for Mary Poppins by flatout refusing to hand over the film rights for the book, no matter how hard Walt Disney tried. It took  Disney a ton of effort to finally get her on board, and the rest is history. And this is the kind of Disney film that I want to see. Emma Thompson looks fantastic as the grumpy writer, Hanks is obviously having a ball portraying the legendary animator and the rest of the cast looks solid as well.

The whole film looks, well, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Saving Mr Banks will be flying in on an umbrella in December, and also stars Paul Giamatti,Bradley Whitford, Ruth Wilson, Rachel Griffiths, Colin Farrell, Jason Schwartzman, and B.J. Novak, with John Lee Hancock directing.
